At ' Hriday Kunj'

Moinak Dutta
This was ' Hriday Kunj' ? I asked myself,
Our tour to Sabarmati Ashram was nearing its end,
And the guide had long gone to help another crowd of tourists,
I was standing for the second time before Bapu's home, 'Hriday Kunj',

It looked as humble as Bapu himself,
White plastered walls,
Red tiled sloping roofs,
A tiny courtyard,
And three rooms and a kitchen,

If those spinning wheels were not there and those pictures,
Anyone could have thought of the house as a farmer's hut,

But then, it was the place that bore every mark of Bapu,
Its white walls spoke of truth
Its red tiled roof spoke of patience and resilience,
And its silence made tourists like me purified.
