Poetry: Sutanuka Ghosh Roy

Sutanuka Ghosh Roy
Two Planets

We are now on two planets
your aroma I carry to my bed
my trembling lips speak of nights of honey and hemlock.
Your effervescing lips mumble the dream of bamboo bushes
where fireflies invite us to exciting discourses.
I speak of soot-laden dry days,
you speak to the breathing skylark.
The fragile Deity of love
revolves in our atmosphere
unspoken words carry burnt memories
in its axis!

Freedom

Over the years
I died
almost every day
Each death,
drew loud applause
no tears.
My hearse
walked alone
I befriended
the crematorium.
My bones softened
ashes immersed
in the Ganga,
I am free
I now live!

Alphabets

They warned her not to learn the alphabets
for they might bring knowledge
of ancient civilizations
to her warm womb.
A woman’s knowledge
can only be kept in Delphi’s museum.
She descended the stairs of the earth
to learn the unknown scripts with trembling lips.
Letters formed life’s corridor,
carried her to a drop of moonlight
her bubbling lips spoke half-formed words
To the Lone Star!
