Spring short-lived
feelings stapled
punched
filed
shoved
deep inside
in the steel grey cabinet
kept in the basement
sacred pages of her life
once coloured with shades of Gulal*
bright red, bottle green, orange
memories of unguarded moments
outpouring of emotions
uncontrollable
play acting scenes
of Radha Krishna
in Brindavan
One spring, the earth rumbled, and tectonic plates of friendship shifted.
*Coloured powder used during the festival of Holi

Awakened
The colours of spring
overtakes the paleness of age
loose hair from the chignon
coiled at the nape of her neck
escape
Palms start to sweat
in anticipation
of the warm touch
will they come visit
the wee ones with their water pistons
screaming…
“Dadi…no excuses”
colouring her face
only day in the year
she feels awakened
***
Lover’s tryst
That full moon night
of spring
when the day had folded its wings
meaningless revelry had ceased
birds had flown back to their nests
children were asleep
air suffused with the smell of Jasmine
you crept up behind me
and whispered “Happy Holi”
tucking behind my ear
a bright red hibiscus
powdering my face with yellow pollen
I knew our togetherness
was for keeps
witnessed by the elements
Magical Spring!
