The title of the book catches our attention, “Why I write poetry”. Yes as poets we do ask ourselves, why we write poetry. Ipsita Ganguly the author of this book answers this so beautifully in her first poem of the same name.  She has talked about different thoughts, different situations in her poems. The poem, ‘The Divine Season’ is a cherished emotion of all Bengalis…with the fluttering of Kashphool our hearts flutter and wait with bated breath for the home coming of Goddess Durga. Her fascination for dogs and a latent comment that four legged ones are more innocent than us bipeds is expressed in the poem, ’My four-legged sibling’. Ipsita speaks from her heart, she doesn’t wrap up her words in colourful glittered paper. So, her love poems will touch the reader’s hearts the most. ‘I wait for love’, ‘The Dull Ache’, ‘If, ‘Lost Love’ and ‘Within you’ are some of the poems which talk about intense love and longing. There is a lingering sadness in these poems which remains with you. It reminds you of Percy Bysshe’s famous quote, “Our sweetest songs are those that tell of saddest thoughts”.
Ipsita’s poems about social issues are impactful and powerful. She awakens women to their power when she says,

“Rise Malati
And tell all those around you
That without you
Your Man is incomplete.

That you are an equal
And more.”

She talks about the unwanted girl child,

“And every time
The fire encircled her
Time after time
She came out
Reborn
Hardened
Polished”

Her words celebrate celebrations. She distils the essence of Diwali when she says,

“Burn into purity
Into serenity
Into humility
Into grace.”

All the poems reflect the humility and gracefulness of the poet herself. Ipsita doesn’t mince words, she voices what she feels directly. Her simplicity in language and expression is so soothing and heart-warming.

The formatting of the poems with short sentences is very delightful. The beautiful cover with white glowing butterflies attracts you to the book.

Ipsita’s love of food and friends is expressed in one her poems and it has a very unusual title. ‘Roti Idli Raita Sambhar and Cuddles. Yes, that’s Ipsita for us, affable and spreading happiness. Another poem, ‘Keep rocking’ which she has written for her 25th year school alumni get together again shows the poet’s love to be happy with friends.

Ipsita’s take on life,

“Life
Is strung in moments
Of eternity”

This is a lovely collection of poems expressing the voice of a dreamer, a happiness seeker and a true poet.
