Skeletal Remains

Snigdha Agrawal
The streets crumble like biscuits
Softly underfoot
Echoing the weight of forgotten steps
Where dreams once spun lace curtains
Now shrouded in mysterious silence

A ghost town haze clings to the bones
of buildings, stooped in muted rows
Facades fading with horrendous grins,
like diseased skin
lying below the epidermis

Lamp posts lean with rusted regret
Shadows fall longer each fading day
Weeds push up and die,
from cracked asphalt veins
Where life no longer dares to stay

Here memories abound of
childhood aborted
adulthood forced
soldiers trampling
on innocence's soft warp
leaving behind carcasses
smelling of rot

Yet here they remain
Ghostly figures that breathe
Their pulse faint
In tune with the city's choked sighs
Holding on to these crumbling walls,
refusing to watch them die alone
