The Ruins
... some cold enchantress, an ember's memory
of fire ...
—Derek Walcott
Diamonds were strewn across sand shrouding Phaedra's tomb in the ruins,
Where the phoenix ascended from an ashen plume in the ruins.
From the echoing valley we hear the faint voices of children,
Where winds carry the scent of Niobe's perfume in the ruins.
.
Ares appears in a witch's mirror speaking of the gold sword
Studded with rubies, a prince's magic heirloom in the ruins.
Beneath the glittering debris of a fallen palace are harps
& jade flutes, remnants of an ancient music room in the ruins.
Carnelian rings & pearl necklaces are scattered among stones,
With garnets & rare crystals once shipped from Khartoum in the ruins.
Oracles spoke of how Circe beset the island with curses.
On moonlit nights dead fires shed sparks & still fume in the ruins.
We hear voices emitted from crevices in rocks, echoing
Across rutted fields, to where anemones bloom in the ruins.
We watched the sun melt into the ocean, when Artemis emerged
From shadows where phantoms still whisper of Troy's doom in the ruins.
Anemone: In a legend of Greek Mythology, an anemone sprang
from Aphrodite's tears as she mourned the death of Adonis.
