Sarat Amidst
Terror
Srinagar’s
apple trees bow to the visitors
their
plump pink cheeks
smiling
of a bumper harvest.
A mile away the
military convoy
is attacked by
masked men
disdainful of
human life
or apples
or the bereaved
families of the
innocent personnel
randomly killed
The
tourist crouched behind her
window
curtain
and saw
middle-aged mothers
picking
up the fallen, bruised apples
a feast
for their hungry fatherless children.

In

Birds of Paradise
in Winter- Sheeth
In the
park’s messy corner in the sheeth of winter days
these
wonderous flowers thrust their heads through the thorny spikes
red and
yellow beaks, a dappled plumage.
Birds
of Paradise that can never fly
a
mimicry of form
by the
Great Trickster
These
‘birds’ will push their colours though the dark bush,
and
then crumble into mud.
Paradise
is a cheat
birds,
a misnomer
Language,
only a blister.
