Baijnath Gupta
The Frostbitten Toe

What must one do
To be among the chosen few
Was the question
That had made her stay
Awake night and day.

"Cresting the crown of the earth
Would be exciting and worth
Trying", her heart whispered.
And it was her heart's
Call she ever gave her ear to
And to her guardian angel's;
And both willed
Her wish must be fulfilled.

So began the maiden essay
Of a raw maiden
Who persevered against all odds,
Against the crushing storms
And she moved up
With many a measured step.

But between her and the crown
Stood the arch enemy
With icy glare in his eyes.

His chilling arrow pierced her toe
But her movement was never slow;
She trudged on and on
And, anon, she was on the crest
Punching the air and planting
The tricolour
And, soon, the anthem echoed everywhere.
