Come September and there is a new kind of magic in the air. It’s a perfect time to visit Helen located in Georgia. In my recent visit to Helen, I find the charm of autumn is just beginning to unfold. It is indeed a cozy escape to embrace the season, to soak up in the lingering warmth.
Helen is a beautiful alpine town, lay in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Known for its Bavarian architecture and cultural influence, it’s a popular destination for the tourists. A lovely place to enjoy the German tradition and Southern charm.
I was there at the stroke of Octoberfest, starting the celebration of German heritage with music, dancing and traditional food. The weather was just perfect for enjoyment. I just walked along the street and mixed with the crowd to sink into this merriment.
There was the Helen Arts & Heritage Centre to discover the local art lineages and cultural signifiers. The streets were full of traffic and the pavements with the tourists and locals. I enjoyed German Cuisine at the Heidelburg restaurant. The idiosyncratic atmosphere inside and a less polished, more creative vibe made my day more meaningful.
Floating down the Chattahoochee River with tubing was a terrific experience and I witnessed tall trees soundtracked only by birdsongs in this scenic immersive journey.
Because of paucity of time, I couldn’t explore the Anna-Ruby falls, but I was told that it was breathtaking experience. With not much crowd there, you can let loose your imagination run wild among natural surroundings.
I went near the foothills of Yonah Mountain and enjoyed the scenic beauty from a distance. You have a chance to slow down in the green meadow and immerse yourself fully in the pristine beauty of the mountains in autumnal glow.
You don’t need to reach the top to appreciate this theatrical mountain vistas. The wisp of cloud lift from the dark pine forest and creates a rare kind of magic.
I spent an amazing time at the historic Nora Mill Granary on way to Helen. This 140-year-old gristmill still grinds corn and produces various corn and wheat-based products. It still uses heavy stones powered by a water turbine.
The adjacent general store offers kitchen items, honey, cast iron and speckle ware and a few other household items. It’s a fabulous place to roam around and adore the skill and purpose all around.
