Creative Motivations: Marjorie Pezzoli on Cosmic Eye (Backstory)

This painting, the Cosmic Eye, began as yardage, a place to experiment and have fun with color. I never get tired of watching the dye flow onto silk, especially jacquard silks. I love how this fabric adds depth to the brush work. The woven design is open to interpretation, for me it is the energy of water, leaves, or flames. Shades of blues, teal, and black were chosen. I began the brush work and let intuition take over, making the white fabric my own.Four yards of fourteen of my hand painted silks were put aside for future use.

The idea came to me to create wall art as part of my storytelling, time to break into my stash and try something new. Eyes have continued to come into my dreams since 2013. They have become a form of nonverbal communication with my StarChild, Alyssa.

This lightens my grief. I have been pulled out into the stars, and have viewed other souls as eyes which make up the fabric of the universe. Twilight dreams are powerful, they help to explain the unexplainable and unexpected life events. I felt very moody when I pulled out the blue and black fabric. Noticing the brighter small areas in the silk I felt hope. It was time to paint my first eye, it wanted to be large and make a statement. The other design elements were spontaneous, that is how I like to paint.

I chuckle a bit as I write this now, the “Eye” fabric did not want to go out in the world as a man’s tie, nor did the other 3 yards.

A 30” by 40” wall piece is much more of a statement. Each brush stroke connects me to the vastness and wonder of it all.

The Cosmic Eye is the second in a series of 30” 40” paintings. They help to share my adventures out in the stars with my daughter.
Time has become very fluid for me since 2013, the jacquard foundation for this piece reflects that. This subtlety gives more depth to the colors and image. The nuances of life I find intriguing and eye opening.
