Snigdha Agrawal
Why didn’t you bring her back?

She stood where the sand sighed,
small feet half-buried,
watching the waves
fold and unfold
their silver stories.

“Sea,” she whispered,
“You always come home.
You leave and return,
laughing against the rocks
Curling at my toes.
Yet, when it came to my mother
You failed to bring her back
From the ICU that night.
Shattering my trust.

“I wait.
My toes dug in the sand.
I don’t run.
I don’t laugh.
I don’t hear the seagulls.
I’m broken like the seashells.
Unseen. Hurting Bad”.

The sea hushed.
It's foam fingers
reaching out to soothe
her broken heart
unable to provide
any convincing answers

The ebb and flow

in the ebb and flow,
the child soon learned
how life would go
sameness…
receding, returning, unfailing

she watched from shore
day in, day out
its routines, never irked
preferred…
over their daily noisy fights
driving her insane.
Away from home

and
over time
she mastered the art
of blending in
with the wind and tide,
learning to love
her aloneness
more and more.

I deserve better

Sea,
you never stay.
You rush in,
Then pull away
just like them.
They said I was “lucky.”
A room, a bed,
a name that changes
like the tides.
I learn new skills
Adjust to their rhythms
and before I’m even settled
I’m packed off
To a new home
You crash,
you rise again.
I just drift
a small shell
the world forgot to keep.
Sea,
if you can choose
what you hold,
Then one day,
please choose me
Make me forever yours
