Special Section: The Sauntering Vacancy

Baijnath Gupta
Vacancy saunters across the sunless street
As autumn slowly withdraws his feet.

A time so ripe for the grey on the trees
To gaze at the grey earth-
Their erstwhile grave,
And their soon-to-be site of rebirth.

A time so transforming
When the yellow lights
Fill some sleepy-eyed
Dryads with golden dreams.

A time so opportune for the halcyon blue lover
To glance at his brown beloved
In the stillness of solitude
To gladden her soul.

A time of revelation for
The proud brick houses
Not to repulse the humble cottages.

A time so healing for
The winding way to lie in peace;
No weight of human feet or motor
Bruises his bosom.,
