Pegasus Complains Bitterly

---Sunil Sharma

In the post-industrial
desert without
cacti
flora and fauna, my
hoofs
do not
work the earlier magic,
on the scorched earth!

Whenever, wherever i roam,
and touch the ground, the
arid soils
no longer produce
the gushing
holy waters
that

sparkle like diamonds
---only hissing sounds from a stony
surface; cracked, dried-up.

Alas!
Hippocrene
is
no longer a fact but
a
forgotten myth;

a belief mocked at
by
the creators
of the
parallel worlds!

I am inadequate to
fulfill
the divine purpose
for
the gasping humanity, my
real family for millions of
years.

I fail to
bring to life
fresh springs
that were once so sacred for the poets!

Unable to
fly
on the mighty,
wide, white wings
in
the smoggy sky,
over the
raging forest fires,
melting ice, heating
oceans,
dying cities
and burnt-out
lands.
I,
Pegasus, beloved of Zeus
and the Olympians, rendered
useless
by
a new tribe of humanoids
roaming
the plains of Black Planet.
