How human they look
In their grandeur and loneliness-
The earth, the trees, the bench and the lake.
Vacancy has built many a nest in the branches of the trees
From where no birds chirp and
No fledglings flap their wings now
No rain now brings straying travellers under them.
No lover carves a heart on their trunks any more.
The earth grows restless scratching its
Green beard that has grown all over its face
And, the tipsy barber is late for work.
On the bench is outstretched emptiness
Where the oldies used to sit and bask
In the glory of their daring youth,
And the green pairs did endearments exchange.
The lake seems submerged in sorrow
With no wave or ripple
As no child now skims stones across it
And no babies dangle their feet in its water any longer.
Nature, in all its grandeur and beauty,
Sits like a queen,
Mute and sad and lonely
Waiting with wan eyes
For her male consort
To come and fulfil her, animate her and give her music.
