Frozen in Time

(Seeking answers from Seurat)

My painting, oil on canvas, and my poem Frozen in Time are inspired by Georges Seurat’s A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. The print I used was a close-up shot, blurry, undefined, and vague. I used my imagination to fill the gaps in my painting. I realized that the blend of colors in his dots was meaningful when seen from a distance. I was fascinated by the optical illusions his painting created.

How can the drops of water know themselves to be a river

Zen Saying

why did people on your canvas

creating a human mosaic

on a Sunday’s golden glory

at the beach of the Seine River

seem distant, detached

 each one like an island

a silent tableau

what secrets did these tiny dots represent

on earth’s vast canvas

each soul a solitary islet – silent, isolated

no clasping hands, no shared embrace

yet, woven together, they created the whole.

what did the silent journey of the Seine whisper

beneath the ever-rolling sun

did it speak of the transience of life

fleeting days and folding and unfolding of destinies

yet, your Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte

has crossed centuries

and your people stayed frozen in time

and found their endless realm.
