THE SOLITUDE OF THE SOUL

The dark vault tonight
is studded with bright stars
that silent shine up there
they seem to chat amiably and
exchange smiles
making you feel
in front of an unveiled part of heaven

But the beams of light
that come from afar
tell another story
lonely in the boundless void
far from each other
unattainable they are
in their desolation

Like the stars
men on earth
islands are of archipelagos
without bridges and
without boats
whenever they are
you can perceive
the profound loneliness of their souls

A NIGHTINGALE

I met a nightingale one day
slowly walking in a meadow
his head bent on the grass
lazily chirping

A strange scene
I said to myself
and stayed there curious
looking at him

Both his wings were snapped
and sadly
often he glanced at the sky
where flocks of birds
were happily flying together
forming large circles and spirals
on the background of the light blue
just dyed of white clouds

I approached the little bird
picked him up in in my hands
talked to him and
said I would have taken care
of his broken wings
he'd have soon come back to fly
and so I did

So much time has gone by
and I cannot say how or why but
he still stays with me
sweetly singing among the trees tops
of my garden.

OUR LIBERTIES

I was born in a village afar
from what they call urban civilization
my skin is not white but smooth
my eyes big and of a light blue
beautiful and attractive they say
is my body
more than so many women
in richer lands
that can go shopping and
buy any and everything they want
to satisfy even their tiniest wishes

But, it is not this that I complain of
I've no recognition of what I am
and treated as a second-rate species
no comfort at home and
a hard work to endure

I long there will come a day
when my sisters and I
can live our lives in full
get our liberties as human beings
without restrictions or limits
as it was to be
since the world's dawn
