MEHER PESTONJI, INDIA (Peace Poem)

Meher Pestonji
Despite war…
(For Ukraine)

Despite heaps of rubble on every street
flowers continue their summer bloom
peeping pink, white, yellow, maroon
in the pervading gloom.

Despite drones dropping bombs
causing death, fire, fumes
each evening rises a radiant moon
carrying light of a soon-to-be-born Sun.

Despite dark nights, fireflies sparkle
flitting from wall to windowpane
their on-off light brings wry smiles
diverting hearts from constant pain.

Yes, we can surmount war madness
with Nature’s agents of healing
hang on to precarious sanity
despite hearts bleeding.

Behead
(For Women in Iran after Mahsa Amini)

Behead
Make headless
One body dies
Giving birth
To multiple heads
Defying the diktat
That led to the death
Of one head.
