Lela Manganaris

The children’s writer Lela Manganaris was born, grew up in and still lives in Athens in the sea side suburb of Voula, an environment which has had a decisive impact on her writing. She studied painting, jewelry and photography at the American College, Athens.

Lela has participated in numerous photography exhibitions as well as Greek traditional jewelry exhibitions. She has written 12 children’s books, most of which were made into plays, performed in nursery schools, elementary, high schools, colleges, bookshops, restaurants, bars and in the most unconventional places. All her books were illustrated by Maria Vergopoulou in a distinctive painting style and the musician Pupeta has composed special music for her plays, or music based on each book theme.

Her two daughters, Dora and Chloe were always present, since they were babies, at her book presentations and readings. Lela regularly appears on Greek TV on subjects ranging from environmental issues to child raising. As an activist, she has been a leading campaigner against sea pollution.
