The day was bright. The sky vivid and cloudless blue. The sun, white and hot, illuminated each green leaf and every budded flower in the earth.
Despite the lack of moisture in the air; a rainbow, glistening and glorious, rose over the azure sky.
It was the day that God was giving gifts to all the animals.
The first to arrive was the cheetah.
“I give you the gift of speed,” pronounced God, stroking the beast’s great tawny legs.
“Thank you, Lord,” said the cheetah, racing away well pleased.
The dog was so delighted to get a present, he jumped up and down, licking God’s nose.
God chuckled, “I give you the gift of joy, you good boy, you,” said God, scratching his tummy.
“What, did you begin already?” asked the cat who had dozed off.
“I grant you the ability to sleep anywhere,” said God. The cat purred contentedly and wandered away to look for a good place to nap.
God looked at the owl, who had been serenely waiting her turn.
“I give you the gift of patience,” he said.
“Who?” said the owl.
“You,” said God.
Moral: God won’t give you anything you don’t already have.
This is so smart and true!
