Ballad of roof thatchers

Straw within straw does entwin
woven lore of smile and pain.
Cuckoo hums a low refrain
prophesying summer and rain.

Kalboishakhi in summer's swings
—a fleeting lore of grace—-
as it expands, embracing a new fragrance,
a hymn in the evening wakes.

When ants rally up to the thatches
prophesying flood,
in a fleeting spell home clings
to the bamboo bends.

Steps in water, memories scatter,
softly lost where time does confer.
Truths whispers of roots unseen
raindrops within monsoon's clouds sheen;

In winter, poverty reincarnate in foggy spleen
underneath the braids of thatches.
Yet comes Spring with breathes anew
and cradles broken dreams like morning dew.

Dilemma of a night cat

Bizarre figures from her dreams wane everyday,
like the faded fabrics upon a pot of china clay.
On that couch, she herself coils
loving Dickinson's death poems,
and rotates her memory like a observant cat
sleeping on a dusky mat.
Her sterile marriage remains a secret cue
for attaining fancied mad cabarets undue;
a pinch of vermilion hue
—a hollow mockery to pursue—
holds a mark of sombre incantation
as if, of a moth’s memory of a cocoon.

Then, she intends to imitate
silence existence of a night cat—
that hovers around empty alleys
where shadows uncoil like liquid vines,
twisting between fractured walls.
So that, within her mindscape—
dilemma blends with numbness,
some mystique chants she may whisper
transforming into a sage demure;
amidst the dense abyss of grin
her abode is curved, and yet is sheen.

An unsuitable bride

Like a mundane faded carpet
in the drunken blaze of summer,
she coils like a caterpillar;
a moth on the wall with fleeting whisper
chants a hollow mockery for her.

‘...now walk a few steps,’
grooms mother says,
‘let's see how delicate are your legs;
little up, your chin—
smile up your chubby face
(…not a bit of grace).’

‘Whatever, no dowry his father desires;
up to you are gold ornaments…’

The boy, she reminds,
who after her school comes
by a cycle green
with a tender wind.

Tears tremble in her eyes,
her smooth dream wanes.
Then an empty vase breaks.

Jyotirmoy Sil
fragments on the wallaby track

You’d be amazed to see how the oak leaves scatter
resemble silhouette of a quiet liar;
Or slender curve of crimson flowers;
as if a boy chasing after strange sculptures,
and reeling over unspoken bargains.

Even when leaves sway in autumn breeze
deep down he's blue;
dilemma of a night cat
smell of a purple blanket,
choking mathematics.

On the carrier of a green bicycle
a radio is playing a dirge—
'autumn breeze is soothing for those
who feels beauty lies
in ceasing fires.'

Transit

While strolling along narrow past-roads—
sense wind carrying
fleeting seeds of thistle
her hazel hair raves snare,
stretches the feelings like kite strings
Myth of an ephemeral sylph
—tale of an ethereal orality;
hear echoes of enchanted minds
with conclave desires;

her white scarf
upon the map—
between tropical green
and desert murmur pale,
my Orion drowned
letters mortgaged.

Only the Spring is to blame
for this sombre raaga;
and amidst waves of numb eyes
I'm nowhere to be found.

Tashari

ripples in Wular
hold their tales of
diffused sublimation;
camphor smell
in quivering moonlight.

booming sounds of popular Bollywood tunes
like a cursed town taken over
or curfew on a winter night;

segments of disoriented psalms—
here divine erodes
like pretentious ceramics
with each whisper.

(Tashari' is an Iraqi word referring to a shot from a hunting rifle which is scattered in several directions.)

Nakshi Kantha

Eroded moments,

A forgone raga

Grandmother weaving nakshi kantha;

The fluent flow of thread

With its furry stitched turns

Embroidered mystique images—

As if some archaic folktales

Entwined with oblivious faces;

Unknown humming of some inner voids,

Some tale of tales.

My eyes charmed

Admiring the colourful curves,

Narrowed furry red shades;

Its mapped edges

Harboured her melancholy

Hymns of her deep ignominy.

(Nakshi Kantha is a Bengali traditional hand-weaved embroidered quilt.)

Kirtaniya

Idle hours of morphed nectar

Dissolving with enchanted poesy;

Scripts embedded with melodious mystery—

Vaishnavic sobriety.

Dreamy flute

Kadamba and lute

Create intoxicating sensations—

Breeze incense.

Carefully woven hymn

Induces images of elixir—

As if elastic polyester spleen.

Khol-Kartal resonates with wind

And vibes of my conclave mind.

Melancholic corridor drenches

With this archaic choir

As if a spectral noir;

In rhythmic coherence

My chaos fades;

Amidst the piety

I sense my solemn absence.

(Kirtaniya refers to the performers of Kirtan, the holy chant in praise of Radha-Krishna. Kirtan is an inherent traditional aspect of Bengal’s Gaudiya Vaishnavism propounded by Sri Gouranga Mahaprabhu in the sixteenth century.)

Essence of Radha

Your gleaming yellow skin

Brings wry mist within—

Images of thirst;

I make your essence with my crave,

Yearning for a few drops of your melancholy,

Imaginary sounds of ghungroo manjari.

Your veil floats…

Beyond my fancied horizon–

Like some marooned jinx;

Sombre cloud spreading within me

With loosely stitched glimpses

From your rusted tales.

Rhythm condenses within you—

Faint melodies bring in Spring;

I fancy creating a tune,

Flute of eternity;

Let it rain over me–

Over and over again.

If I succumb to your cobweb of desire;

Delving into a labyrinth—

In seeking consolation;

It's also your sin,

For my passion is your cruel intoxication—

A lured perversion.

Buddha in the Clouds

Foggy hollowness spreads against my mind

Primitive desires condense into a marooned jinx.

I yearn to breathe…

All of a sudden,

An echo comes amidst abyss of tempests

Telling of an altar hidden for the sacred breath.

Clouds create an effigy…

A face with a swoon mellowed smile…

The spiral coiffure of sage deep in meditation

Betrays of how

Everything is in a whirl—

Our tales

This faint murmur

Birds chirp…

Twirling cord;

Even my desolate soul…

How I owe to pain for my surreal tales—

Saga of nomads,

Of circus and desert camels

In half visible terrains,

Terrestrial musings in Tibetan horizons;

Serene, transparent and pathless lands—

Everything lightens up.

Death of a sire

Beside a cylindrical pillar,
Where strange graffiti
Merge with signs of pierced hearts
Infatuated names,
Lies a sire with his last few breaths.
Numb lips seek to tremble,
"La ilah…

Folks pass this congested passage
Ignoring such annoying trifles…

"Dua! Dua!”
Vacant chants for steel pennies
Discordant gibberish
Whips of hunger
Unheard melodies
For so many a years
Have been etching some tarnished epiphanies;
Like a rugged Isaiah under the elm
Telling of a forthwith rotten time,
Mutters the sire with shivering tongue,

"La ilah..."

One last time…
Before stretching the loon body for a rusted hearse,
With pale eyes and dried throat,
The fallen seraphim utters a twisted apostles,

"La ilaha...illi…”

Folks pass with covered noses
Ignoring such annoying trifles…

Requiem for a Scarecrow

A blurry field,
Gloomy sight;
A scarecrow!

Its mystic eyes and cruel smile
As if waiting for ages
To induce a sire to its dark mires.
Cruelly ensnared…

Some archaic cults
In a morphed realm,
That perplexed mind,
Yet fixed nothing.

Flashing visions induced chaos--
Some days' clusters,
Grandfather's radio
Broken decades ago,
Juxtaposing cold pebbles with tiny oysters,
Crossing unknown miles,
Mild breeze touching her hair,
Fragments of wounds,
Intriguing lines...
Stranger tides,
Cold streams.
Misty echoed commensurate with
Corrosive sublimation.

This is how,
When the thrashes in an ominous circle did bestow,
I desired to become a scarecrow.

Girl who walked by the railway track to school

She used to walk by the rail lines,
Swallowing tamarind pickle.
Way to school,
Back to the slum
Red tape of her shriveled hairs
Contrasted with the gray spheres.

She used to hum the tales;
Of faded school bells
Frivolous errors
Mystique chapter on longitudes;
Of dust and dipping inks.

She used to walk by the rail lines
Way to school
Back to the slum.
Flickered with tiny dreams.

Then this girl was married off.

Heat of noon
Staggering bees
Fading fense
Grammar or tense
Annoying trigonometry;
--nothing remains.

Sheer fense!
