WHAT CITY IS THIS?

        English translation

        by Prof.Anil kr Baro

We will recall

Oft and on, the sounds that pass through the ear.

Will recall the City endeared by them walking up and down through the crowded hubs of concrete and recall the unfamiliar and breathless busy ness of city folks.

And will recall forever,

Whenever we share a feast at village picnic, or

Whenever we go to harvest the golden crops of the season,

Whenever we light earthen lamp in the evening

And offer the evening prayer at the corner of the courtyard and

Light the hearth at the kitchen, we recall

Whenever we offer Kherai worship before the singing and dancing of Bwisagu festival.

IF YOU HAVE TIME, COME TO SEE OUR VILLAGE.

         English translation

         by Prof.Anil Kr.Baro

If you have time sometimes come to our village

From wherever you stay, cities big or other countries.

If you come sometimes

Step in our village and touch at my home

Where you will find everything new every day.

Here, soon after you reach

Our grandma will welcome you with joubidwi (Rice beer)

Mom will beg you to have a cup of tea.

Simple Village folk we are.

We believe no one can carry with us the eatables, dresses or countless treasures after our death

Only these will turn to ashes

We lead life like this.

Our father goes to plough early at dawn with the bullocks

Both in the rainy and winter days

None of us realise his fatigue nor does his face reflect any despair and dissatisfaction.

If you come here, you will realise the true meaning of Life

And come to know the ways of the soft hearted Life of the folks

Come only once, just for once and see our village.

English Translation
THE VILLAGE IS STILL NOT FAR

The two sides of Death
As soon as morning
The dead bodies of people are seen
On the green grass.

The blood is falling in Death yelling
I have seen
It is a stigma dropped on the
Face of the world.

Mother and father were together
But, nothing surprises in this world
When handing over blood to us.

Our hearts burn like wood
Dry world gets cold by rain
Staying in front of a pond, we miss
Thousands of lost faces.

Look at Death.
Did you see anything?
I still see something stuck
Like a red blood flowing inside the blood cycle.

When the evening goes down
Busy dreams of the body
Flows through the waves of Death
A part of the darkness comes into the world
By opening the mouth

The village and I will not sleep again tonight.

English Translation
TIME

Under my sky
There are many things
Despite trusting them all
It's so hard to believe myself
People trust in God more than themselves.
People trust lies
People trust terrorists
We don't even trust our neighbours.

So even today, ammunition becames the most powerful
Even after killing millions of people
It is not tired
Because it relies on its power
And people, didn't even trust themselves.

We break the law for war
To show the awesome powers in the world

Peace is lost!

If those terrible powers are so confident
For once, people should trust themselves
To be good and superior.
There is no more valuable trustworthy thing in the world
And people cannot even trust themselves.

Durva and Freedom

                              Origin in Bodo- Jwishri Boro

Translated by- Bhuma Rani Bargoyary

Being ignored by all

How would one speak of freedom?

Let down of words and gesture

How would one express liberty?

Where the soul itself is forsaken

How would one speak of life’s endurance?

Still the Almighty has bestowed the strength to uphold our heads,

The strength to speak is our birth right,

To enlighten oneself with the rays of the rising sun, is the command of the soul.

You - me though ignore

You - me though try to defeat;

Durva has the right to breathe freely.

Durva has the liberty to bond in friendship with the dew.

Durva thought trampled several times has the courage to give life.

Durva when dipped in a lota (Kalash) of water has the freedom to purify the earth.

Your and My faces

                              Origin in Bodo- Jwishri Boro

Translated by- Bijit Goyary

The lost dies hard; old habits die hard.

Hide out somewhere, the curious.

The significance of life!

Searching hither and thither

The motion of life camouflages too.

The flunkeys of time we are.

A dream of a body floating on words like a boat

And a switch of colours on the river water.

Sorrows soaring in the air

You and I seek to sport the radiant mask

of our solitary heart.

ON THE DAY OF MY DEATH

Translated by Dr. Anil Boro

On the day of my death the world will rejoice, Nature will put on a green garb

Because plants no longer breathe green

Listening to my voice.

There are no more shades ... in my shadow.

On the day of my death the insects will dance.

Ants will gather in a mass rally.

Because my step will no longer fall on their doorsteps.

Words trembling at dawn will no longer be troubled:

A state of happiness in time's journey.

On the day I die, don't be sad for me, you too.

From the day on, I will no longer eat from your fat income.

Now I am a doll living with the pain of the bosom.

Sore of the unfathomable heart

A well of repentance.

In my living, rests feelings directionless of time's murder.

I know not, where you would be on the day I die.

Maybe, I will not see you.

I will not get the last touch of your hands.

Maybe I will not hear sounds and words from you

Like Amrita Pritam and breathe the last breath

Lying on Imroses's palms.

On the day I die, the world will rejoice...

And Nature will usher in a new guest of the new

Breed, sparkling with happiness.

FIRE

Translated by Prof. Anil Baro

Fire, fire

All around.

The smoke chases the slave body playing with nakedness.

The tongues of fire are only their finds. They know not, nor do they want to know the dreams of slavery.

They are rights of freedom.

The flags of liberty

The songs of liberty

The music of slaves.

Swords and shields, bows and arrows

Cannons and firearms on hand, they carry granary of fire.

Can enflame at will, the whole of Nature, one world, one era.

Fire, fire all around.

Can enflame at the slightest pretext, the naked skin of heaven.

They see not the burnt out pieces of rough stone.

They feel not laments of pebbles.

They press hard under their clutches

And turn to ashes the dreams of the slaves.

And the tongues of fire transform the aspirations and roads to reality to ashes.

There is a strong smell of raw blood

Screaming noise spread all around

Shocked to see the dead body of their son

They are speechless with mourning

Someone has become childless

Someone has lost his little child

Somebody has lost his mother

UNFULFILLED DESIRE (English translation)

And then

The evening engulfed the brown stubble

Of the paddy field

The shadows too returned as if

Walking at long paces

Till then

A few cattle were still busy grazing

May be their hunger was not fulfilled,

May be they were never satisfied.

Grazing and cud chewing every day

Seemed like a boring journey of life.

Perhaps the road of return is boring, lonely and difficult

And nobody accompanies one like the shadow

In the back journey of life.

After a little while

The crickets will sing

The fireflies will flicker,

And after a while,

The moon will spread its magical beam

And the river that was soaked in blue a while ago

Will become silver white.
