Zen and the Art of Sculpture

Rob Harle

The sculptures below were created by me during the period 1980 to 2000. These pieces were inspired by the “way” of Zen and were intended to be placed in landscaped outdoor garden settings. The two decades living in relative isolated rural areas was really a time of Zen contemplation, and the sculptures I produced then were intended to convey the feeling of contemplation, harmony and a deep spiritual connection with nature so others might (re) experience this and regain some respect for, and connection with the natural world.

“At the still point of the turning world.
Neither flesh nor fleshless;
Neither from nor towards; at the still point, there the dance is,
But neither arrest nor movement. And do not call it fixity,
Where past and future are gathered.
Neither movement from nor towards,
Neither ascent nor decline. Except for the point, the still point,
There would be no dance, and there is only the dance.”
T.S. Eliot
