Translation: French Poetry from Belgium and France

Vatsala Radhakeesoon
Translated by Vatsala Radhakeesoon

French language has some unique beauty. This statement is clearly justified through French Poetry that often carries readers in the gentle or poignant waves of words.

I have the immense pleasure to bring forth some French poems by the Belgian poet, Martine Rouhart and French poet Manuel Renaud.

The original poems in French appear first. Then, my English translation of each poem follows.

Martine Rouhart
MARTINE ROUHART

Chaque Matin

Chaque matin
c'est la m├кme histoire
les vies s'├йveillent
se propagent
se r├йp├иtent
de maison en maison
d'arbre en arbre
de fleur en fleur

Every Morning

Every morning
is the same  story
Lives wake up
spread
repeat
from home to home
tree to tree
flower to flower

La Pluie

La pluie la plus l├йg├иre
cristalline
chantante
la plus m├йditative
est celle qui tombe
de feuilles en feuilles
du couvert des arbres
quand l'orage est d├йj├а loin

The Rain

The lightest rain
crystalline
song-like
mostly meditative
is the one that falls
from leaf to leaf
of the shelters of trees
when thunder is already
roaring far away.

Un Go├╗t Sucr├йe de Violette

Le matin venu
dans la broussaille
des pens├йes nocturnes
fleurit parfois
un mot une phrase
au go├╗t sucr├й
de violette

A Sweet Taste of Violets

The arrival of the morning
after the multitude of
my endless nocturnal thoughts
at times bears the flower
of word, of line
amidst the sweetness
of violets

Si Tu Savais

Si tu savais
comme parfois
j'aime vagabonder
mon esprit court les champs
des bouts de phrase
en partance
casca
dent dans ma t├кte
battent la campagne
grimpent des versants bois├йs
font des ronds dans l'eau
s'├йgarent dans la clart├й lunaire
Tant de d├йlicieuses irr├йsolutions !

If Only You Knew

If only you knew
how at times
I love to wander
my mind runs across the fields
fragments of outgoing lines
swirl  in my mind
beat in the countryside
climb the  wooded slopes
whirl in water
blend  with the moonlight
Oh, So many sweet unsolved mysteries!

Le Piano

Une touche de bleu
Une touche de rouge
Une touche de vert
L'accord parfait
Le sourire muet
Les notes immobiles
Align├йes dans l'attente
Clavier patient
Une porte ouverte
Rideaux et fen├кtres
Vers le jardin
Vers tant de roses
├А t├вtons les doigts
Petit pouce aux cailloux
Trouve son chemin
Et tous les autres
D├йcouvrent la route
Encore craintifs
Encore maladroits
Mais ils jouent d├йj├а
Malgr├й l'ombre tenace
Les vieux nuages
Charg├йs de nuit
Tes deux mains
Se serrent les coudes
Les sons s'honorent
Et se font beaux
Pour un dimanche
La musique arrive
Pour la f├кte
Le piano dans l'├вme
Le piano dans le c┼Уur
Ton vieil ami
Ouvre ses bras
Il t'embrasse d├йj├а
Tu es chez toi.
The Piano

A brushstroke of blue
A brushstroke of red
A brushstroke of green
All in perfect harmony
The dumb silent smile
The fixed notes
Awaiting in line
Patient keyboard
An open door
Curtains and windows
Facing the garden
Facing so many roses
By the fingertips touch
on the pebbles
Tom Thumb
Finds his path
And the others
Discover the leading road
Still frightened
Still clumsy
But they already play
Despite the persistent shadow
The old clouds
overload the night
Your hands
cooperate
The sounds show
their self-worth
And embellish themselves
for a Sunday
The music announces
the feast
The piano in the soul
The piano in the heart
Your old friend
With widespread arms
already kisses you
You are at home.

Un po├иme au soleil

Un po├иme au soleil
Des mots d'├йt├й surtout
Parsem├йs de rendez-vous
De murmures ├а l'oreille
Petits baisers sur l'herbe
Ce parfum entre nous
Et puis tes yeux surtout
├А conjuguer le verbe
Aimer.
Un po├иme au soleil
Sans l'ombre d'un nuage
Le ciel et davantage
Du bleu, tous les bleus s'├йmerveillent
Ta main, nos mains amies
Le m├кme silence ensemble
Nos c┼Уurs qui se ressemblent
Bien s├╗r tout est permis
Tout est aimer.
Un po├иme au soleil
Des rires, surtout des rires
Comme des ├йclats
Dans l'air qu'on respire
├Йclaboussures
Poign├йes de groseilles
Sucr├йes tes l├иvres
Un po├иme au soleil.

A Poem in the Sun

A poem in the sun
With words of summer undoubtedly
Sprinkled with rendez -vous
Sprinkled with whispers on the grass
This perfume spreading between us
And then obviously your eyes
express love
A poem in the Sun
Without the shadow of a cloud
The perfect sky
All-blue, mesmerizing blue
Your hands, Our hands
Together we plunge
in the same silence
Our heartbeats resemble
Of course everything is allowed
Everything is summarized as
simply “To love”.
A poem in the sun
Laughter, and mostly laughter
like the sparkles
in the air we breathe
Splashes
Handful of currants
Your lips as sweet as sugar
All giving rise to
A poem in the sun.

La Nuit est un Po├иme
La nuit est un po├иme
M├кme sans soleil
Petite loupiote, c'est pareil
Comme des "je t'aime"
Qu'on ne chuchote m├кme pas
Pas besoin de ├зa.
La nuit est un po├иme
Quand j'y pense
Les mots qui dansent
Sous la lune elle-m├кme
Et ces phrases que j'├йcris l├а
Je te les donne va !
La nuit est un po├иme
M├кme sans sommeil
Le temps d'un r├йveil
Le ciel plafonne quand m├кme
Les yeux vers le jour prochain
Ton c┼Уur bat sous ma main
Un po├иme pour la nuit
Pour ce silence petit
Le bonheur contre ta peau
Comme il est t├┤t !
La nuit est un po├иme.

The Night is a Poem

The night is a poem
|Even without the sun
A small light from a lamp
has  the same effect
like “I love you”
that we don’t even whisper
As it’s no longer needed
The night is a poem
When I ponder
The words dance
under the moon
and the lines that I’m writing
I dedicate them to you!
The night is a poem
Even without sleep
The time to remain awake
The sky is ceiling -like at least
The eyes looking forward
to the next new day
Your heart beats under my palm
A poem for the night
For this brief silence
The pleasure of being close
to your soft skin
to your soul
As it’s still early!
The night is a poem.

French Poetry by Two Canadian Poets

Vatsala Radhakeesoon
by Vatsala Radhakeesoon

French is often referred to as la belle langue Fran├зaise – the beautiful French language.

It is spoken, read and studied in the land where it originated, that is, France as well as various other countries of the continents of Europe, America and Africa. French is also appreciated in many non-French speaking countries. This is due to the fact that the very act of listening to it gives a feeling that it is poetic and it is a language in which intense emotions and deep thoughts can be expressed with unique perfect precision.

I have the immense pleasure of bringing forth some works of two contemporary French Canadian poets, Huguette Bertrand and  Odette Beaudry respectively. The original poems in French appear first, followed by
my English translation of each poem.

HUGUETTE BERTRAND

D'UNE SAISON ├А L'AUTRE

La beaut├й de l'arbre
m'engendre
├а chaque instant
me raconte ses silences
ses effeuillements
d'une saison ├а l'autre
m'aspire vers le haut
jusqu'├а son fa├оte
tel un projet d'oiseau

FROM ONE SEASON TO ANOTHER

I’m revived by
the beauty of the tree
every moment
it shares with me its quietness
its leafless life
from one season to another
drags me to reach
its top
like a bird’s dream

NUIT ├ЙCLAT├ЙE

Avez-vous remarqu├й
que la nuit porte en elle
toute la lumi├иre du jour
ses accents graves
les plus fragiles
ses accents aigus
les plus os├йs

Nuit extravagante
├йclat├йe de rire
en attente du jour
et la vie au-dedans
ses murmures
ses passions
et tous les accents appropri├йs
au fur et ├а mesure
des ├йv├йnements

SPARKLING NIGHT

Have you noticed that
the night carries within her
all the daylight
its most fragile
low sounds
its most daring
high ones

Fanciful night
bursting into laughter
while awaiting the day
and the life within
its whispers
its passions
and all the suitable sounds
gradually unfolding
as time goes on

DE TEMPS EN TEMPS

Le temps se porte bien
d├йfile ├а travers les saisons
se repose chez l’enfant
hurle chez les grands
il passe

il passe d’un regard ├а l’autre
se m├йfie des heures rouges
de nos nuits trop noires
il file

il file entre rires et pleurs
se fait complice du vent
il secoue les ├йv├йnements
d├йfie la lourdeur des ├вges
il attend

il attend
au coin de l’oeil
sans broncher

FROM TIME TO TIME

The time fares well
It passes through seasons
rests in children’s hearts
shouts in adults’ minds
It passes by

It moves from glance to glance
becomes suspicious when seeing red hours
in our darkest nights
It flies

It flies amidst laughter and tears
partner with the wind
It shakes events
defies the tension of ages
It waits

It waits
in a corner of the eye
without stumbling

RENCONTRE

Se saluer ├а travers les branches
devant la col├иre du vent
quand les jours se tordent
dans les reliefs du ciel

Se saluer ├а travers la voix
├а travers l'oeil

THE ENCOUNTER

Greetings through the branches
facing the wrath of the wind
when days are twisted
in the slopes of the sky

Greetings through our voices
through our eyes
making time linger
to conceal space between our acts
inscribing a pact
registered in our memories

Let us meet again though an intense word
like stubborn insane people
and with hugging words
disolving ourselves in a diffused light

ODETTE  BEAUDRY

Espoir

Que la lumi├иre de ton visage
Vienne ├йclairer la nuit de mon ├вme

Que le feu de tes yeux
Enflamme la pierre de mon regard

Humer toute l'odeur de ton c┼Уur

Tes l├иvres ├а l'ombre des mis├иres
Engrosseront d'amour tes paroles

Hope

May the glow of your face

enlighten the darkness of my soul

May the fire of your eyes

ignite the precious stone of my eyes

Letting all the fragrance of your heart
on the surrendering borders

Swimming to the further river-bank of life
May the love of impermanent death survive
Taming the quietness
until the dawn of our bodies

O my love, my sweet island
chanting many songs of solitude
In the warm blood of red currents
Songs of mature fruits
Emphasize on the union of the suns

On your path will smile many flowers
Much space and greenery
Much sunlight and many seas
These are the beaches of your fate

Your lips, freed from pain
will solely utter  sweet loving words
Embellishing my secret fantasies
I’ll wait until evening wedding

And remaining awake till the early morning
On the banks of oceanic expectations
To the smell of crazy herbs and golden honey
Where the bird sing for us a song of joy
I’ll wait

And hope…

Je Cherche

Je cherche des morceaux d’├вme

I Seek

I seek fragments of the soul
On a snow boat
Stuck in ice
On the banks of the river

I seek fragments of the sky
Engulfed in an avalanche of clouds
In the bright season
Of ancient scriptures

I seek fragments of childhood
Concealed by the curtains of time
In the whiteness of snow-benches
Where slip the toboggans

I seek fragments of the river
Lost in the mounds of ice
While waiting for the swallow
Even if she doesn’t make a summer

I seek fragments of you
Lost in my storms, my blowing snow
And in the angels, in the passionate nights
Drifting from my glance

I seek fragments of myself
On the wings of cold birds
That fly above
The white stained glass of winters

I seek fragments of us
Locked in the Archives for years
Within the sand and melting glaciers
With the inner fear to find them again

And I seek…

Mes Amours

Mes amours dureront
jusqu’au n┼Уud de ma m├йmoire
L’enfant en moi est la garantie
de la permanence

My Loves

My loves will last
in my long term memory node
The child in me is the proof
of permanence
