THE HEART THAT YEARNS FOR FESTIVAL

-        English translation by Welsing Hanse

When the winter’s cold began to subside

The air of festival

Made its way into my heart.

Behold!

In a dew drop

The face of the tribe, the attires –

The tradition in entirety appears.

The breeze of culture

Spreads all over the world.

Like the early morning fog

It covers the land.

A heart wandering like cloud too

Senses the scent of tradition.

The mist rising from the Brahmaputra

Loiters around the festival site

Reluctant to leave.

In the history of Karbi

May the event be scripted in golden letters.

Let it survive for thousand years.

A FALLEN DROP OF TEAR

        --English translation by Welsing Hanse

Perhaps,

You’re unknowing of the price.

Although just a solitary droplet from a molten heart

It has touched the earth with a thousand words within.

As it scatters laden with soil

Let the breeze come and touch you.

In the dark night when the moon is nowhere to be seen,

The world seeks for its beam.

When the lonely wind touches me

The lightning within my heart

Tries to come out in the world.

My heart always in fear of the fall.....!

With the dew from the Himalayas

Play my longing eyes

This ever flowing river

Has begun to stop and form a lake.

Translation in English -
A Love Letter from the Hills

Like every year, this year also I received your letter
You know that when spring unlocks the flower to paint the laughing soil, I miss you a lot

I am ready for my journey
I keep thinking what to bring for you
Ashamed too!
You have everything

Your stock is a gift that never ends
I am a human being, I am not a good hearted person
I keep drinking the blood of your liver

I keep doing the work that destroys you
In spite of everything your love for us never ends
Because you consider us your children

I’m so bad I’am worthless yet you love us
Like a flowing stream of rivers
Which has remained intact since centuries

Today you called again, with a whole lot of nourishment
To splurge with fruits and vegetables from around the world.

Where will we find a donor like you
I feel sorry for you
Sun or rain,storm or gale
You have always stood for us

Hills!
We are grateful to you
When I reach my ground,
I will make a place for you in the hearts of men.

The translation in English
May our voice be louder than lightning

While analysising the distance between light and darkness
If you sparkle like a firefly
I too shine like the morning pole star in the mind of the east
Flattering the light of the nebula continuously in the dark night
Shines like the sun and the moon
Because everyone knows the history of darkness

We both took the path of darkness
The pain of not tolerating the darkness,my same pain

I can’t muster courage in the dark
We are both around in the dark
Feel the heat of the breath
You have been in the dark for years,
I am the same

But we were still together
Neither did you call, nor did I call
We were enemies instead of friends
We kept playing hide and seek
Mistook the darkness as a friend
You are strong enough
So let’s fight together
Sound together
May our voice be louder than lightning
Bring the light away from the darkness.

An Abode of Peace

Come on and head out,

Let’s build an abode of peace

Enough…enough
I’ve seen enough, I’ve heard enough

Of  hatred, enmity,
fights, quarrels
jealousy, adversary
bitterness, annoyance,
selfishness

rebuke, condemn, impediment
wars, battles, like a poison

Can’t love alter our hearts?

We have lost what we had,
To gain what we don’t; how can we?

It is in our hands,
but dreaming to build by destruction

will only bring calamity

Oh brothers and sisters
How will it be, to come together

and build ourselves an abode of peace?

Shall we try once
By and by,
Let’s test ourselves.

Till the Last Breath

Like the falling leaves of trees
As time passes…

Man doesn’t stop aging
It goes along with the years;
unfailing

To pledge an oath,
A word of honour

Whether we fulfil or not
To befriend every step of struggle in life

Not even if we bear
Just enough to grasp;
Happiness,
Peace and love

To prosper one another,
Can be enough help for each other

The past year has gone,
The new one has come

With a glimpse of new morning’s sun,
the breath and strength that’s left;
Let us keep striving.

This poet is famous for his misdeeds

Whosoever his heart connects with …

Everyday

Like a single stick of candle

My life maybe diminishing

However …

That lady of my age that touched my heart

I won’t create a disturbance

So, there are many who lose hearts on me

So, you too

NOW IN EVERY RAINY

(BARLA PULOTE NONKE - English Translation)

After April’s burning

If earth’s heart

Turns damp …..

Your thought strikes suddenly…

After a period of bath in the rain

Across the patch of land

Young newly sprouted plants

Smiles with a desire to see the world.

When…

In the heat of August

In series of meeting and separation

With the life giving showers

Who had seen

What future has?

Had I been witty!

You too

The air pleasant air of the seasons’ communion

Throughout the rain

The hearts so tender

Ah! Such a pleasure !

All because of you.

It was for you

People talked of the heart turning to a chilly winter.

My dear, now

I don’t have the desire to meet the monsoon

As long as there is winter that follows.

English translation

A DAY WITH YOU AMONG THE BLOOMING POLASH FLOWERS

Inglongpo, Suri hills

Arnam Sarpo, Athan Kethe...

Simply on hearing the names

The ears are alerted, and the heart craves to reach them,

Just with your name

On the bank of Karbi Langpi

Seeking a companion to go and see the ‘blooming polash’

It seems I keep waiting for you.

I may have met you,

Or might not have met you.

But it feels like

Walking hand in hand among the air of February, March

We went together to pluck the polash flower,

That is the understanding between us.

Sometimes I am anxious with the thought...

If the thread we tied breaks,

And I fail to join them;

I cannot send you messages like before

The message of three, thirteen rupees

It is not a thing that it will end today -

Moreover, it is lot like

Making calls to you without letting others know -

There is no more joy left;

With joy, shyness, and a little fear

With such love conversations

We have been passing days together

Even in the presence of the numerous challenges,

The bridge linking the two banks will stand firm

Like the flowing water of the river.

I desire to come... but I can’t

Though I come, it becomes a pun,

Even if you permit me to come

I only have the legs gifted at the time of my creation

So still I couldn't come.

The sweetness in your voice

Now is filled with bitterness and sourness-

But my longings

Are yet to be achieved...

Someday soon, I will come to your house,

Holding your hand

I will take you to February, March, among the blooming polash flowers.

SOMETIMES (English translation)

Arrival of the early winter

Morning ruled by the mist

Soothing the heart so deeply

I stretch high but can’t catch the mist -

They whisper to me

And invite me

Sometimes beside the pool of Kangthilangso waterfall

Sometimes along the banks of Karbi Langpi

Sometimes under the chingnan trees of Umrongso.

Though it is only a dream

Only the touch of the gentle wind

Warms and then cools my heart

I am an upright growing tree

Don’t let the wind hit me

When my body breaks, my trunk will rot and wither;

Resting under the chingnan tree

Though its furs tickle and itch me

Like the water of Kangthilangso waterfall

The pleasing air hovers

Within my body.

Fearing it might run away

I don’t  want to spill it out even once.

I have no courage to raise my voice loud

If I let it out from my mouth

It appears like the blooming flowers

So I keep them covered inside the heart.

If it really is a flower, it will face big hardships to bloom

When my chest was beating loudly

No sign of exhaustion came in you

You kept smiling -

How do I praise you?

I don’t know how

Someday the time will come

Letting them out from my heart

I’ll let them befriend the gentle wind

(For they say that a confident heart will receive the blessing)

On being a Man

(Poet building confidence in himself)

You’ve come ahead to fight the battle of life,

Who do you think will help you?

What do you have as weapons?

Maybe nobody has the answer.

Man are…

Always servants to the eyes, ears, tongue and hands.

Should they be followed all the time?

Where is your identity as the owner of the body?

Why should you be following if other are in commotion?

Wait, take some time, don’t make haste?

It is only a matter or early and late,

One day all must sit on one mat for a meal together.

We'll be together once again

                (One Lover at KYF)

Yes,

The wait has now come to the end

No matter how much tears swallowed

No matter how much nights went sleepless

My soul will get a new life.

With the sight of your beautiful attire

With the sound of your 'chengpi-chengso'

The heart that has been beating so silently

Will dance with the steps of the 'Nimso Kirung',

The 'sarlang' of the 'klengsarpo'

Will surely wake me up from the year-long slumber.

Then,

There you'll see me among the happy smiles of kids chasing balloons

Among the aged women pounding nuts

And among the lunsepo and lunsepi

Yes, you'll see me.

And, maybe

I will see you too.

Come dressed in my favourite colour

Come adorned with jengjiri and jangsai

There in the silent space of "Hongjai"

I'll read you a story till dreams captures your eyes.
