Elemental: Sutanuka Ghosh Roy

Sutanuka Ghosh Roy
Born of earth
a winged seed
 nostrils full of body odour
I weave an earthy civilization.

Born of air
kneading the azure sky,
I whisper into the
ears of Sundari
and Hetal trees.

Born of fire
I burn my frame
in the ghats of Manikarnika
sprinkle the ashes over the
ruins of Lothal
and walk bare feet down
the course of ancient Sabarmati.

Born of water
a blue hyacinth
I listen to the daily chores of Grey Heron
 and Little Egret.
The water chestnut touches
the navel
the feet touch the step-well of yoked desires
I wait for tomorrow’s rainbow.

MY LONG JOURNEY

Akhmad Cahyo Setio

How I still have to count the numbers
The number between my long journeys
There are numbers of my life

A long journey across the shores of the ocean
The traces of travel that leave footprints
Two, the waves have returned their tracks to the good current

Between three and six there is four and five
Four is you who always paints rainbow colors on the ceiling for me
Fill every empty glass with your beautiful cool face
Knitting every thread until it becomes a comforter that hugs me
Now fulfill your promise to me
And hopefully the past I still send to you through the corners of my nights

And five is my other laugh, my other sad, my other happy
The one there I want to share about me
They are beautiful flowers that I strung, cheerful smiles that I frame
Let me keep it on the walls of my memories

These are the remaining six among the three long journeys
Let me recalculate about the time that has passed
Because there are still so many poems that I want to write
So many hopes I want to express
So many prayers that I want to say
So many faces I want to smile
Lord, please

Poems of Gopal Lahiri

Gopal Lahiri
What is that hour?

I walk on the pavement, shadows lengthen,
the red sunset touches the skin of the high-rises.

I am not carrying any umbrella; I don’t want rain.
The sky greys, unaware of my mistakes.

The old city lies, the ambulance goes past hooting by the
car shade, the evening makes it way to new dizziness.

Someone leaves a rubber sandal near the brick wall,
concrete steps go slippery, to the edges of the water.

There are people ahead of me, carrying white flowers.
so, I wait, and more wait, and they leave.

A slow sadness holds me firm, eventually loses grip.
I find now a large hole in my recollection.

I am all alone, a train to catch, a deadline nearing…
What is the time, what is that hour?

Long Read

Between these pages I weave a magical trapdoor
you come and go, leaving unknown palmprints
somewhere underneath the red pillows.

I see Kandinsky canvas still outshines the rainbow
without losing the rain, because those who can
no longer drop flame petals and yellow buds,

Assemble on the green courtyard, singing almanac songs,
cyclists on the street still circle the round square
and on returning home, keep feathers in old diaries.

You dance to the sameness, collect red yellow synonyms
and when I do not want to go on with more words
you write long read stories in dark blue ink.

Contours

I find while stroking the wall, I know
where the image is, imprinting the isobar
contours you now see in my face,
the elevation, the twist, the sink zone
the puzzle without white squares
as I revert back to the secondary level.

That was when arteries were lit with
innocence and laughter, foam and froth,
and of beauty that thriving on a single look,
an allegory of life perhaps, I do not understand
that thing, even now, a book I borrow
always talks to me with my father’s face.

Here I Stand

All of me
The good
The bad
The beautiful
Here I stand

All of me
What you love
What you want
What you need
Here I stand

All of me
Each smile
Each caress
Each embrace
Here I stand

All of me
Today I'm yours
Today and tomorrow
Today and forever
Here I stand

Edge of Night

Just when I think sleep will be obtained
When the edge of night seems to be within my grasp
There you are so close, yet so far
Almost within reach but each time I extend my hand
You seem to move just a bit further away
Realizing this isn't any different than in real life
I stop reaching for you, wanting you, trying to pull you near
Every time you have been present and right in front of me
You've slipped through my grasp
Always knowing I wanted to possess you
I feel you took joy in the chase as much as in the act of fleeing
Not only did you not want to be possessed
You never desired to be loved wholly and truly
I've given up the pursuit during the sunlit hours
And I no longer wish for you on the edge of night

Hold On

I always heard that when you find someone you love
You should hold on for dear life
But why?
Holding on to someone who doesn't wish to be present seems futile
Keeping you here is selfish
Only for my benefit
Especially when I know your heart has moved on
You have stayed longer than necessary
You are loyal and duty bound
In the end you feel stuck
No longer wanting to be right where you are
If I am honest with myself, I became comfortable with your presence
You were someone to fill the void
It wasn't really love, was it?
Now I believe you were a placeholder
For the one I will want to hold on to

Scar Tissue

Weathered and worn
Bruised and battered
My heart has become a fortress
Impenetrable and barely functioning
Every ounce of love it once possessed
Has turned to bricks used to create
An even taller bulwark that is not meant to climb
Rough edges and occasional weeping holes
The scar tissue is threatening to no longer serve a purpose
Once mended and bound tightly
I can no longer hold in this pain
One assignment- close the wound
You can't even do your job

Poetry: Nandini Sahu

Nandini Sahu
Haiku Poems of Love

Star
They are keen to know why am I a star
so bright. This is how it glows , a scar,
when it snaps into the scheme of light.

Rhyme
I rhyme like poetry
to spot myself in the large frame of time
and to set the dusk resonating, in our projectile.

Poem
You said, love, anything for you, my truth eternal.
Take me, take heart—take it all. I glinted--
Make love to me like a poem, if at all!

God
He conferred upon us a new directive:
love each other, just as I love the Universe.
Now everyone will know that you are my cohort.

Faith
The mountains may alter, the peaks may be astounded
but my faith won’t move from you,
and our agreement of peace won’t be dazed.

Life
Through your unwavering love
I am granted interminable life.
I will be so, as long as you are the ‘last leaf’.

Prayer
Prayer is the sacrament of gratitude.
My only prayer is gratefulness to Him for the existence of ‘us’.
My solitary prayer is ‘thank you’, and nothing else.

Half of Her Lovers are Half the World Away

Men who loved their wives and those who did not
all fell in love with her
when she was simply out and about in the world.

Her ‘men’ knew, she was the brimming vessel with an eternal capacity to pour.
Well, she didn’t think much about love,
neither of the ‘safe’ love-loves, nor of any loves in the conflict zone.

Her dry sardonic wit made them only fall in love more with rationality.
Lost in time, with the audacity of hope, she was found in eternity;
turning her wounds into wisdom, an expert at the law of diminishing marginal utility!

She wanted to be forgotten from their collective memory
when she had to wait to watch the slippers of couples in front of the Taj
while the couples were clicking away ‘couple-pics’ to glory.

A street urchin poked a hole in her story in the midst of a deadly inner silence.
“Won’t I even be allowed to wander lonely like a cloud? Ahhh!”
She, of course, had her many longings and belongings.

Her ‘men’ every so often left her drained, high and dry.
Some other times they cared to say a proper goodbye.
In any case, she didn’t judge them, she just did low lie.

Her self-introspection and serious reflection were a caricature of living-loving.
Her faith was bigger than fears with time’s intoxicants in her hands.
There was no wind in there—just air to protect her ‘men’ from fading.

Above her outer skin, there were wordless walls
with a fistful of sky. With time, invariably,
her men turned into distant memories.

She wrote the stories of many a life, but
her own story lay buried at someplace in a vault.
One day she lost the keys to that treasury that she had carefully concealed.

She had that habit—
save the best for the last.
But much cared-for-stuff from her wardrobe were always lost.

A Man Like You

Did I paint the image of a man like you and secured you to that
canvas, I don’t really know. But I know, I tailored myself in.

You may ask me, why did I come to your life in the first place?
“Well, not because I was lonely, depressed, blue or was feeling awfully alone.

For those ailments, there is therapeutic support, isn’t it? I sensed my ideal
quest for a man like you when I was feeling the best of my feelings--

contented, romantic, ebullient, jovial, strong, real, feminine.
I wanted to share a segment of those with you, a man like you,in crux.”

You treasured that. You cherished when I said, “if someone
comes to our lives with depression, they will only share that. And

if one comes with optimism, that becomes infectious.”
Then you resolved that I am the most optimistic woman you have come across.

I love the way you touch me without touching me sometimes
and of course your gentle kisses and ardent touch when you are intense.

I know you will never give up on me even if I am grim or otherwise;
I love your catching giggles and the beam. A man like you is my happy place!

You are unceasingly on my cognizance—if they call it love.
You are the man who can finish not just my sentences,

but my thoughts. Are you my Stream of Consciousness,
or that Objective Correlative that I live in reverence?

They say the glass is half-empty or half-full, it’s a construal so false!
How about our new narrative my love -- of filling the quasi-filled glass?

After I had given all my reasons you just winked. As if you knew that you knew
that you knew -- a woman like me is your life time quest, your solitary wish.

The Maps to Reach You

“When feelings are immense, words stand poor.”
From the blue you said that, you, my cherished blue-eyed lover.

You traveled all the way from the island realm remote
I knew, you knew, that is the time when the drinking glass had to be fragmented.

The glass of the mellow and all-encompassing wine is to calm.
What goblet is in my hands? Which map takes one to you, my chum?

Suddenly the Yellow Moon is full. Tonight
you hang like a silver smile on my lips, you pierce me abysmal.

This city sleeps on the pavement. They say a charmer will cross the asphalt soon.
Planting his chauffer, he will disappear to the air thick and thin.

Hauling on my city’s dusky fabric the chauffer is vexed by sea, sand and salt.
I see, you raise your hand to touch the Yellow Moon in amazement.

Just to intoxicate you a bit in a little-eyed window of the lover’s nest
just so you’d be evoked by taciturn glasses and the street I connived.

Standing in the lattice of silence, I am water lily, I cling to the portico
I think of you like ease and breeze, my acerbic downcast face as you pass through.

In the hall of my longings you belong, I smile and make headlamps wink,
in these demanding days your envoys take to the place you’d never want to go.

Because you never knew to want more, and because I introduce you to you, tacit.
Wait and watch, our blue sky will gradually grow thinner and solvent.

Let’s put their lights out, aware and unaware let them sleep.
All I know today is, in your presence I am good to go, let them peep.

Good to go and climb to the summit and reach
the Terza Rima of my wistful wishes and pivotal, infinitive desires, deep.

Poetry: Supatra Sen

Supatra Sen
Birth

May my words have the power to heal
The broken and bruised
To build hope
In hearts groping in darkness
Those lost and wandering
Amidst noise and chaos
Those tired eyes
Seeking rest and sleep

I write and re-write
Frame and dismantle
Tugging with words
Longing
Desperate …

Daybreak!
The first rays glow on my pen
The leaves twirl and dance
On the blank open pages
Sparrows and squirrels sing a chorus
A sudden wild gust scatters the papers
My thoughts...
And my poetry
Is Born…

A Midsummer Day’s Dream

A trip… a long trip
To distant lands
Of glittering peaks
Cascading waterfalls
Mysterious forests
I would sit in quiet
And scribble
And compose
There would be peace
And stillness
All that I have ever longed for
Utopia

A sudden screech
And halt
Traffic to a stand still
Curious eyes
Irritated tones
And there in the battering April sun
A silent procession
A protest against wars
Against oppression
Cruelty, senseless killing
By humans
For humanity

But I saw a mighty river
Flowing ceaselessly
The waves powerful
Yet silent
All engulfing…
The waters flowed on
To embrace an awaiting ocean
Of equality
Universality

Often trips become journeys
And sojourns voyages
My midsummer day’s dream
A vibrant pulsating throbbing
Reality
Some day
Some time
Perhaps
Perhaps…

Celebration Of Life: Nivedita Dinkar

Nivedita Dinkar
1. Let me go astray ...

listen to those unheard hearts ...
illuminate the darkest route ...
hear the most tragic story ...
be the combatants of the Strugglers ...

eat the ''Forbidden'' fruit once again ...

Let me go astray ...

Let me
bridge the roughest river ...
air those events which are sinking inside the earth to breathe ...
read the lonely Poems gone unnoticed ...
mother the frightened child

drink the ''Dushasan'' blood once again ...

Let me go astray ...

I want to go astray ...

2. My Religion

Living in passion
Staying with enthusiasm…
Believing heartbeats
Empowering sleep…
Imagining a beautiful frozen lake
Thinking as a morning achievement…
Exploring benefits of Black Coffee
Dance Like nobody’s watching…

Is
My way …
My life …
Is

3. Green Tea

As you sip
With your soft wet lips...
The Green Tea
With a fresh squeeze of lemon
And
A few drops of stevia
Over Ice- viola!!

I imagined myself
To be a crystal clear ice
Melting
Through your lips.

I felt the warmth
Of your lips
Drizzling
My Soul
Into
Unifying one.

4. Whispering Life

Whenever I walk through
The grass of  Life….
My feet feel the calmness
The smoothness
And a joy within the heart
Not to tear apart!

Whenever I fly away
The clouds of ambition
Teaches the softness
Of frozen crystals
Brings the light of Life
And colors inside!

Whenever I dance ceremony
The rhythm of desire
Moves with emotions
And expressions
Keeps the spirit inside
Intact and precise!

Whenever I smile to melt
The pleasure of satisfaction
Conquers the gloominess
Brightens all around
Leaves a ray
Of soothness they say!

Whenever I touch the soul
Illuminates the galaxy
Lifts the energy
Of strength
Raising a new dawn
Which Life has shown!

5. The Complexion

Why so much hype?
Why so much hush hush?

In this unfair world...
Why is fair beautiful and not Dark?
Why fairness is a benchmark for beauty?
Why our society is obsessed with 'white skin'?

Whereas,

Draupadi, Satyavati, Kali
Or
The Rama, The Shiva, the blue skinned...
Or
The Krishna, the shyam rang...
Or
The Lord Jagannath Puri,
Who is vibrantly black...

Can ever be repainted in Modern India?

It is possible
And not impossible
If the inner darkness is cast out!!

The art of Poetry: Brindha Vinodh

Brindha Vinodh
I pour into her-
she pours into me.
Together
we flow
as
a river
carrying the soul
kissed by the sun
the moon
the stars ️ ️
and the eternal sky
playing the
music
of the birds
with the
flavors of the seasons.

Bleeding
as and
when weeds wade
through-
polluting-
only to masquerade
those clotted scars
as scarlet roses
to retain that
fragrant fervor.

Smoothly flowing, still,
until those turbulent waves
of a powerful
tsunami take over
to merge and converge
with that one perennial ocean-
a mahasangamam of several souls.

Prison time (Free verse)

Alienated from the rest of the world
Wrongfully Imprisoned for no crime
Served death sentence, biding his time
Wrote on the walls poetry that came to mind
Couplets, cinquains, tercets, villanelles, sonnets
Each and everyone, celebrating light
in a darkened cell
proclaiming his innocence
A large body of work left behind
Scribbles on the walls
Whitewashed
Before the next occupant arrived

"Do you have any last wish before you die?" Jailor asked
"Readout my poems to open their eyes" he sighed.

Street Smart (Limerick)

There was once a lady dressed in white
Hair neatly swiped into a bun tight
Wrote poetry sometimes
Most often without rhymes
Broke a limb in a campaign fierce fight

Magical Powers (Tercets-10 syllables)

Read poetry when besieged with tiredness
Fly on the wings of imagination
Landing on the runaway of the Lake Poets

When feeling defeated take no revenge
Read Maya Angelou's inspiring poems
"Still I'll rise" empowered with her ink quill

And when all else fails to cheer your spirits
Read Rabindranath Tagore's Gitabitan
Betwixt its pages you'll find songs of love

Poetry thus has magical powers
Heals, seals, cracks, and cuts through the choice of words
Outlive you and me, new forms will take birth

Poetry: Candice Louisa Daquin

Candice Louisa Daquin
mislaid

she reads my entrails
i can’t hide behind false gaze
she sees me
not the stigmatic view i hold
something penetrating
separating fantastical from
welts and mold.
Under her inspection
i flourish
free of pretense
if she loves what she sees
i must necessarily
trust that
proffered hand
only truth reveals
depth
i spent years fudging
fishing, fooling myself
thinking games of pretend
led beyond brick walls
her eyes take me in
and don’t spit me out
they leave me whole
headed for different
perspective
reshaping scars
new skin beneath
lightening my
mislaid
heart.

gaining time

the self will choose immortality
over blinking city in dust bowl
she rides in time to
the flight of her internal loathing
carving pieces of courage to seagulls
as ginger stains in night fall searing,
sorrowful pink, mindful of songs wrought in lasting preserve
memory a false muse, negligent in her task
she spreads fancy, a table cloth, wet with appeal
and we, soft in principal
take tender, grateful bites
sleeping instead of seeking
as day falls and rises
behind the musk of
indolent what ifs.

home

throw light on tableau
stark, our characters form reluctant worms
choosing well-worn path
harder to divine from recoil that bridge
elastic in space like rubber bands
little girls elongate, yearning in fantasy
hopscotched into their roles
white sheet yet stained with after birth
hair brushed back we face ourselves at scarred tables
to be removed from this blister and lance ourselves
matchsticks tindering against time’s low bell
who shall seek cliffs edge, who gentle swell
of rain meeting sea all washed oblique
no beginning in our rinse
this cloud covers nothing but a wish to be
everlasting
knowing our claim will devour
make then, in this needy wrap of night
muscular in her prowl
my opening mouth on yours, searching for equity
we writhe in our need to exist
when those around us weakly cease
some say death brings us closer
sexing in cupboards by the mortuary
sign in, take a seat, cast your clothes
one step removed from beasts our burden
knowing as witnesses we plunder our fear
in earthbound sweat and tears
you break over me, splintering your hunger
we are two children, lost in the spilt comfort of utero
searching for brothers like lighthouses
blushing against whisper of fog
blot in and out, a morse code
decipher my loins slick with damage
rest your aching in my enveloping bondage
tied by the neck to hang like december rabbits
lacking escape
we are the warmth of apple sauce and spices
lost on haunted tongue
fugitives meeting in fear, entwining bloodied fingers
we forge moonshine and defy calculation
all who live must cease in their turn
as knowing we writhe against fate
brandishing longing for one more sip of comfort
laid loving on our brow
before seasons shift like weary walkers
hunched against cold
breaking whiteness of fields in
flushed longing to reach home.

rapture

the day is set
clean crockery gleaming like polished milk
laid out in expectant situ
her face burns on the side where they took out her rage
boiled it like wool and knit it back in shape
leaving mouths of cotton to cough out soggy words
against the sharp edges of a defined world
intolerant of soft
she lifts the coffee pot, catching her reflection
three faces for each turn of head
one makes the bed
one undoes the effort
one lies prone
her fingers chilled as if she plunged them
endlessly into ice water and shaking off
tried to revive feeling

around the corner
school children
stamp their feet against first frost
wiping their lips of toast
parents already folding day into schedule
young backs weighed with books
soon unread as they eagerly stretch
into indifferent facsimile

yet
one remains gazing upward
as reluctant geese, escaped from slaughter
pierce oatmeal sky in honking retreat
are they wondering if one day
they will be sitting at the table
offered the tender cut and refuse
for the sake of those who despite themselves
lift heavy into air and seek freedom
kicking tight patent shoes against marbled wood
we dry our itching mittens on rumbling radiators
dreaming in the steamy hiss of soaked youth
before light is sacked from lantern and all
doors bolted against damask darkness
believing we keep ourselves secured
from those fabled specters
from those familiar songs
held just beneath memory with tin latch

crows who know
best route home
fill plunging skies with indigo wings
and for a moment
the trees seem to be lifted
from their roots like
lovers, temporary given over
to rapture.

A Space called Poetry: Shyamolima Saikia

Shyamolima Saikia
How does it matter
if she doesn’t possess
an abode of concrete
to call her own?
The long-harboured wish
remained a dream,
As time enmeshed her in its whirl
and she was left wondering if her kind
own a dwelling at all,
A freehold that is forever deferred
As she flies off her nest
And adapts to new environs,
But finally,
She found a space of her own,
A place she wants to return oft,
Wherein she can give vent
to all the random thoughts
crowding her mind,
create, decorate and sum up
all that are of utmost appeal to her;
Here again she can take shelter,
Away from all the cares and anxieties of life,
An escape from the humdrum,
hustle and run,
Unfettered by pangs of success and failure,
Or of rejection and lure,
Free from all cares and vile sentiments,
Here is all warmth and radiance
Here is all freedom and joy
The choicest d├йcor,
Wiping out life’s monochrome
And splashing a riot of colours,
Chiselling her way through words
Herein,
she thus builds her home…

Poetry: Being A Woman (Deepti Gupta)

Deepti Gupta

A river flows within me
And there is compassion
In my heart
I wear dreams in my eyes
and sunshine on my face
a Rosy smile on my lips
I breathe love, I sip love, I live love
I pour love, I shower love
I am a west wind, that takes away
the dead leaves of sorrows
And grows the flowers of joy
I have the power of
creation and regeneration
You can prove your might
You can hurt me, you can cheat me
You can make me an extinct
But you don’t know
my ‘phoenix power’
I will rise from my ashes
And transform into
a new person again…!
Still, I breathe in your grief

THE MAGIC OF POETRY: Paramita Mukherjee Mullick

Paramita Mukherjee Mullick

Paramita Mukherjee Mullick

For centuries humans have been searching for the elixir of life or elixir of immortality. Elixir is a potion which grants the drinker eternal life, eternal youth and cures the person of all diseases. I was thinking deeply about immortality one day and I got the answer. Robert Frost had said, “Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words.” Suddenly I realised, POETRY MAKES EMOTIONS IMMORTAL and that is the magic of poetry. Poetry is about imagination; poetry is about knowledge and poetry is about emotions.

We see poetry swirling its magic wand and healing in difficult times. At present the world is torn by unexpected events like pandemics and wars. In such unexpected challenges poetry has the power to soothe, to calm and to work a special kind of magic. The power of words in poems can make a sad person smile, the power of words in poems can lead a person’s soul from darkness to light. W. Somerset Maugham has said, “To acquire the habit of reading is to construct for yourself a refuge from almost all miseries of life”.  Yes, reading poetry is a refuge from almost all miseries of life.

For ages poets have brought in revolution by their writing. They have tried and also been able to bring about change in the society. Their pen has brought about social change. Poets have cried out loud against atrocities, against discriminations all through the ages.

Again, poetry is the expression of new ideas; poetry is the expression of new dreams. “Without dreams, there can be no poetry. And without poetry, there is no life bearable”. This quote by Vallery-Radot reaffirms the connection between dreams and poetry.

Poetry like a painting fills us with awe. Da Vinci had said, “Painting is poetry that is seen rather than felt, and poetry is painting that is felt rather than seen”.

The other day I came across the word ‘philocalist’ which means a lover of beauty; someone who finds and appreciates beauty in all things. And poetry is the other name of beauty. Don’t we always say, “As beautiful as a Poem”? So, poetry has the power to sieve out the positive from negative situations. Poetry with its magic wand can make ugliness of life precipitate and bring the beauty of life to the surface.  I am a scientist transformed into a poet and believe me! Poetry has given me immense mental strength. Like a Banyan root who finds nourishment in the hardest of rocks, I try to find the tiny positivity, tiny beauties hidden in negative situations. In this way poetry has not only helped me go forward without fear but it has also helped me to give strength and help others to go forward with confidence.

So, do we really need the elixir of life when we have poetry?  Poetry which is making our thoughts, our deeds and our emotions immortal. POETRY IS THE ELIXIR OF LIFE!

I end by expressing how dreams give rise to poetry through this poem of mine,

DREAMS WEAVED INTO WORDS

Some dreams tiptoed into my mind
Expanded silently and spread to my heart.
Those dreams translated into emotions,
Unique, one of a kind.

Those emotions were treasured
Nourished and nurtured.
And then those emotions found their thoughts.
Expansive thoughts, not narrow, not measured.

Those deep thoughts found words one day.
Spilling onto paper through my quill.
Expression of my dreams, my ideas took place.
Poetry was born for other minds to sway.

Poetry: Celebration of Life (Nivedita Roy)

Nivedita Roy
My gaiety, my joy
Interspersed with some soliloquies
On a path to find myself,
I find solace in my scribbles

Agonies or ecstasies
Are borne with elan
Painful sagas etched
Blissful memories are inked
They are tucked away
Warmly in my journal

I wish to blossom as the spring
My writing gives me a swing
Each step is a lesson
I am the Cinderella of this season!

I laugh, I cry
I love, I loathe
I share, I hide
I smile, I brood
I pour out all on a piece of paper

With all its ups and downs
Life is a celebration
Poetry is the soir├йe I attend

Stricken hearts need a balm
Stress borne humans need to be calm
The bards alight with a peace branch
An apparition in white on the ranch
The vast ground for unbridled thoughts
What can be and what is nought
Poetry is panacea for all that’s lost

POEMS OF A MUNDANE LIFE: Piku Chowdhury

Piku Chowdhury
1. THE KITCHEN

Turmeric glow in a bottle on shelf, and
Ruddy rage in another jar
Shallow green and diffident ochre
Trying to match the riot not far.
Riot of hues on counter shelf
Verdant greens and orange and cream
Carrots, spinach, leaves and mass
Red bell peppers in silent scream –
The fire is lit
The ire splutters
And rage and love and scars and fear
Mingle in the oily voyage
Telling tales to the hand that steers;
The bottles add to counter stuff
And blended are they by the fire,
The hand keeps moving the ladle
and hears the tales of joy and tear
Tales of life and tales of death
Of myriad hues and evolving faith
Burning is no option here
Raging red should add to flavour;
The kitchens blend the hues and churn
Ever new tales of regeneration.

2. THE WASHING

Will it be washed away with the blue
Fragrant liquid poured in cups
Into the mighty snowy machine
That whirrs into an active life?
The stains of deceiving conniving souls
The marks of envy, labour and pain
Will the machine wash the stench
Of heartbreaks, betrayal and all such stain?
We add one more cup of detergent
With hope and yet with resignation,
The machine whirrs and churns the dress
That we have stained with inclination
For profit and sadist joy of victory
Winning over moral indignation.
We keep adding the washing potion
We keep alive the comforting cycle
In the hope of forgiveness, and
In the hope of a miracle.

3. DUST

The stealthy morning rays of sun
Creeping through the summer blinds
Create a vista for the dust
That swirl and dance in unison.
The duster adds to the merry crowd
Little rainbow gossamer beings
Twirl and swirl in a bizarre dance
Amidst the scheming metro bling.
Blaring horns and heat and cheats,
Dying honesty, unscrupulous feats –
Threats of death and poison touch
Defeated by the magical dust.
Promise of meraki in the dust -
Rainbow wings that spread a hope
Of dust that may sail through dust
Of the modern existence.

Poetry Affects Eternity: Elizabeth Esguerra Castillo and Shahid Abbas

Elizabeth Castillo
Elizabeth:
Poetry and sunset they go together,
For indescribable words cannot just be uttered
The moment you lay your eyes on
Such magnificent poetic beauty.

Shahid:
Poetry is the language of the soul,
Love, peace, brotherhood, justice, and harmony are its goal
The beauty which exists in every mind,
Reminiscing lovely memories each time.

Elizabeth:
I am the poetry I write,
The cool breeze brushing your cheeks
The humming birds in a dreamy meadow,
The howling wolf on a mountain peak,
What would be this world without poetry tomorrow?

Shahid Abbas
Shahid:
Poetry is the love in ones' heart,
I feel the universe and let it be my part
The image of nature,
Allows us to appreciate all creatures.

Elizabeth:
Poetry affects eternity,
Though the world is in uncertainty
The verses will be passed on,
Inspire many future generations
We live in the shadow of life's poetry.

Shahid:
Poetry the core of the world,
The Universe exists in it's every word
The passion
Which awake the dying nations.

Elizabeth:
A poet's word lives forever,
The lyrics of his song will linger
A thousand years may pass,
But poetry's legacy will last.

Shahid:
No doubt we will be forever alive
In the golden pages of literature,
The universe will read
Of the beautiful creations we have.

Poetry: ELUSIVE GOLDEN YEARS (Irene Emanuel)

Irene Aarons
Some years past retirement,
I'm feeling quite okay;
my bones are getting creakier,
and I'm heading for decay.

I'm supposed to know the answers
to every little thing,
I'm now this wise old person
whose words of truth, are king.

I search my very cluttered mind
for proof that I'm a sage,
but all I get is arguments
and stuff about old age.

So finally I realize
that since my day of birth;
I've waited for my golden years
through countless days on Earth.

Is this the story of my life,
of chapter, verse and song?
I think I missed the highlights
while trying to be strong.

I'd like to turn the clock back,
to carefree youthful days,
when every day was newly bright
and life passed in a haze.

Poetry: Sutanuka Ghosh Roy

Sutanuka Ghosh Roy
Kanchanjangha

He calls me when he
wants to see me
waylaying the assignments and eerie frowns
I rush.
 He happily co-habits
with Tamur
unabashedly carries
Teesta as his arm-candy
mist-laden
his neck on the shoulders
of the fluffy clouds
he embraces.
Like a coy bride, I smile
he opens his lips to love.

Address

The green bordered matt brown
dusty road holds Dadu
who sat
beside the Sanko and
watched the Pankouri
speaking to the water
in the evening.
The Tulsi-Mancha
heard Thammi’s vespers.
 The fireflies
stop for a discourse
by the mossy stairs where
Ma oiled her long tresses
and the sparrows fought for their
tenancy rights.
 The stars now post letters
to new addresses.

Sanko: small wooden bridge.
Pankouri: the Indian cormorant.
Tulsi-Mancha: is a part of an age-old Bengali culture of planting a Tulsi (Basil) plant at home.
Thammi: Paternal grandmother.

Poem: If Only (Meenakshi Mohan)

Meenakshi Mohan
If only …

Let me forget for a moment --
The perils of the world,
disease and pandemic,
 war and destruction,
the sobs of a nine-year-old child,
in a war laden country,
soaked in the blood of his mother,
“Mamma, I will never forget you”

If only …

I could forget for a moment --
storms and the tsunamis,
the impuissant tears of a mother, or
the roar of a helpless forty-five-year-old child,
“Mamma, I can’t breathe!”

If only …

You were to write my life in numbers,
Let me celebrate the remainder --
listening to the symphony of the breeze,
dancing with the swinging trees,
smelling the fragrance of a flower,
catching a raindrop in my hand,
gazing at a rainbow.

If only ….

I could celebrate the days --
staring at the ocean waves
counting their coming in and going back,
watching children making a snowman,
pulling out carrots from its nose,
chuckling in their merriment,
playing peek-a-boo,
stories of angels and fairies,
funny faces and laughing
until tears roll out of my eyes.

If only ….

I could simply celebrate each day,
and hold my sadness at bay.

Poetry: Santosh Bakaya

Santosh Bakaya
Through the Window Chink

Of late
I had known only tortured sleep,
thrashing and muttering,
tossing and turning in bed, eyes red.
I was aghast, stuttering incoherently.
Would this hate and cynicism last forever?

I could feel fear coiling around my heart,
an unrelenting serpent,
curdling the air with its presence.
Tense, I wondered at the senselessness
of violence and brutality.
Wry words ricocheted in my mind,
cutting like paper.
Tears rose to my throat, heaviness spread
through every fiber of my being,
as vile villains gloated over their cruel triumphs.
My tongue in swirls, my voice hoarse, I shuddered.
The grotesque nightmare had me in its clutches.
Humanity had been murdered.

I felt a sudden urge for cinnamon tea,
and an itching sensation in my fingers.
At that very moment, as if on cue,
a bird hopped on to the window sill, trilling away.
A sudden cascade of words
started splashing their hues on paper.

As I peeped through the window chinks,
I saw some cirrus clouds painting
indistinct chalky streaks in the sky. I blinked.

“Look at the clouds,
see how they are swirling,
and how exquisite are the sunrays
falling on the mountain peaks.
Come, remove those tears from your cheeks.
With all its ups and downs, life is still a celebration.
Hear the creek humming in celebratory fervor?”
Trilled the bird perched on my window sill,
removing the chill, filling my heart,
thrilling me into sensations new.

Unbridled joy took a false step.
And slipped-
 All over me, reminding me
that, come what may, life was still a celebration.
I stretched my hand for the cinnamon tea,
relieved that the nightmare was over.

The Wind Chimes

I close my eyes and see a locust tree.
What is that under the gnarled limbs of the tree?
Snow falling in driven blasts, casting an air of melancholy.

Through my misted window,
I see a pheran clad man plodding through the piled snow.
Woe!  He lost his footing, flailed his limbs.
Ruddy cheeks defaced by scratches
received from the bramble, he scrambles to his feet,
only to disappear in a sprawl of slush and snowflakes.
Still breathing heavily from his hike.
I rose up, as gloved fists pounded at the door.
The pine tree outside the gate, threadbare in its extremities,
rustled as though whispering a warning.
How does one overcome this abysmal darkness?
This utter mess?

But I heard no warning,
as my ears were riveted to the lyrical cadences
of the wind chimes, miming a forgotten rhyme,
of those long gone sylvan times.

The fist continued pounding at the door.
But I heard it no more,
as the wind chimes did an encore,
celebrating life, once more.
