Nasera Sharma: Identifying characters of her stories in Shaheen Bagh

Nasera Sharma

Translated and presented by: Rajni Chhabra

When an author reaches a mass campaign in search of characters of his/her stories, it can be very well guessed that campaign of Shaheen Bagh is touching astonishing heights.

One such, famous novelist and story writer Nasera Sharma approached Shaheen Bagh and identified in females and youths in that mass gathering, characters of her own stories, in diverse forms. After returning from her visit, she penned some of them on paper. Photographs of visits of Nasera Sharma were viral on social media that very night.

Rajni Chhabra
Nasera Sharma is the bold writer who reached Iran during Islamic Revolution there. It was for the first time that Founder of this Revolution Ayatollah Sayyid Ruhollah Khomeini, after coming in power, gave his first interview to any journalist and writer and this interview by Nasera Sharma was published in literary journal ‘Sarika’ very popular magazine in 1982. Nasera Sharma pursued her studies in JNU and had a brief teaching career in Jamia Milia Islamia.

Hereby, I am presenting before intellectual readers my English Version of her write up, which can be also deemed as her effort to perceive the Campaign from viewpoint of a writer.

MY WORLD, MY BONDS OF AFFINITY

That night in Shaheen Bagh proved to be a night of feeling, instead of being a night for expressing myself. I did not deliver any speech from dais, did not broadcast or vocalize my thoughts. As if, Foundation of Jamia Milia Islamia, date of Movement for Independence and those years of my teaching career were repeating themselves. All those episodes and memories started radiating like pearls, emerging out of closed sea- shells of my mind.

Present was confronting me. For a long time, I was lost trying to co ordinate between past and present. I was lacking in verbal communication; heart and mind were entangled in whirlpool of sentiments.

Abruptly, world of my feelings demanded from me, “Are you not recognizing ? They are not strangers; they are characters of your stories. Your very own, for whom you had woven dreams of today. And, Lo! I was able to break the ice.

A smile diffused on my face. I heaved a sigh of relief, as if nobody was a stranger to me any more. When, I glanced at the boundary wall, meant  to accommodate males, behind the circle meant for seating for females, in every face, I caught a glimpse of ‘Rehaan’ of ‘Sarhad Ke Is Paar’, who deems partition as a curse.

Farida of ‘Pathar Gali’, Humera of ‘Taboot’, Mahrukh of ‘Theekre kee Mangani’ had aged and were now sitting here in form of Asmaan Khatoon, Bilkis Beghum and Serwari. I glanced further and visualized ‘Sheesh Mahal kee Chaar Behane’, middle aged now, who had raised guns in their hands, that were lying hidden in ornate baskets for keeping bangles and with same attitude and self confidence are insisting on Constitution.

Tender aged boys and girls, who were sitting silently and were listening keenly to the speech from stage, seemed to me reflection of their grandparents, who had witnessed second upturning. They reminded me Sabina, that innocent character of story Ali Baba and Chalis Chor, who erases all the marks of census, thinking that these have been marked by Forty Thieves. She makes up her mind that like Marzeena, she has to save all from thieves.

Young nursing mothers were sitting, holding infants in their lap. Some young girls passed in front of me; out of them one I could co relate with’ Ferzana’of  Khuda kee Wapsee”, who was telling them “ In my fit of fury, I had all inclination to clip off beard of that ignorant Mullah, but you all have taken a fascinating step and negated his existence.।’

“Had no other option left with us. We would have stepped back to another century, if kept on following them.”

‘It is better to read and decipher law for ourselves and fight for our rights, instead of listening it from other. O! My dear sister, our mother, maternal grandmother and paternal grandmother did the same. And now, without any leader, we are our own guides.

I recalled, I had written somewhere, “A person is born twice. First time from womb of mother and second time from adversities of circumstances”.
Today, I realized that when a person is confronted with both, life and death, he longs for life.

That night passed.

With the advent of dawn, the whole ambience has changed.

Who could ever stop Shaheen Bird (White Falcon) from flying high? So how can be it stopped now? Shaheen kept on flying above Mohallas and cities, motivating people to fly high. Even if we have apprehension that we are moving ahead towards danger, the dominating spirit in us ushers what difference does it make if we are moving towards danger or danger is moving towards us? All the characters, co-existing in  Indian Culture were once again in front of my eyes, whether it be Veer Ji of ‘Aamokhata’or Savita of ‘Insaani Nasal’or kite maker of ‘Chand Taare ke Shatranj’ or Groundnut seller of ‘Uska Ladhka’ or Beaurocrat Shalmali of ‘Shalmali’ or Murlee of ‘Akshyvat’ or else Dr. Kammal of ‘kuiyaanjaan’ or Post-Graduate Sidharth of ‘Zero Road’ facing pang of unemployment or Prof. Prahlad Dutt of‘Parijaat’or be it Immamudin of ‘Zinda Muhawara’ who preferred staying in his own country instead of migrating to newly created country after partition.  All of them are uniting, longing for freedom. Walking together hand in hand, raising voice in unison.

This is the infrastructure of our Indian society, that can not be shattered whosoever might try.
Because, all of us have realized that we cannot live without one another and cannot thrive without one another. This is our identity; this is our sanctity: this is our Constitution.

Book Review: Fathoming Thy Heart

Review by Dr. Meghna Sharma

Fathoming Thy Heart: Translation of Popular Rajasthani Poetry of Ravi Purohit
Translation: Rajni Chhabra
Edition : 2017
Price: ₹ 200.00
Publisher: Kalasan Prakashan, Modern Market, Bikaner (Raj) 334001

Going through the translated poetry collection by renowned litterateur Ravi Purohit “Fathoming Thy Heart” makes me actualize the olden times as if the poet moves carrying the love-odes in the palanquin of words like muslin threads, abysmal into the dictionary of soothing emotional dives.
The intricate sentiments perhaps are a bundle of sensitivity mixed with pure hearted airtime call for his beloved who is around in his breath and aura existing like the air, like the water, like the fire with a cool sense of dedication along with the awaiting dreams whom he is looking to make true in the worldly senses.

Meghna Sharma
The reader gets fully engrossed into the balsam of moon light where the poet is remembering his beloved and wants to tarnish all boundaries by being a forceful meteorite…’in the pretext of her memories’.

Authoured originally in Rajasthani by Ravi Purohit and translated in English ‘Fathoming Thy Heart’is encompassing a whole world in itself where the poet is fascinated by his own craving to be one with his soul - mate who has perhaps caught hold of the sinking nerve of the author while he pleads "O! My beloved, you have taken hold of dusky sun of my life."

The translated work by Rajni Chhabra is quite close to the original work as I could get the priviledge of going through the original Rajasthani as well as the translated version of the work. The 'feel' has found its way in the bestest effort to reach its zenith in the work in my hand. The version is splendid by all ways and means and depict upto great extent the spellbound emotions penned by the author in his mother tounge.

Rajni Chhabra
The poet inexhaustibly remains engaged in inscribing his beloved’s name on his palm, but fails and the pain turns afresh of the wounds of his heart as the droplets of blood spill around reflecting the image of his beloved all over. The imagery used in the expression is perfect when he ventures into every message of his mobile just to feel the presence of his beloved, perhaps there, if not around him therein.

The extended arms of his beloved make the poet nostalgic of adorable moments; he is forcing himself out of the marshes of worldly boundaries to meet the fragrance of his love circumambulating the temple of his imaginations with the idol of purest of the pure and divine breezes of assured meeting with her.

The poets dives and probes into the turbulent waters of sensitivity declaring himself that "The more I land, the more I settle down very deep, fathomable at times and at times unfathomable too, I am in state of anxiety due to fiery flames in my heart."

He guarantees in himself that ‘Craving is strong, firm is determination.. that we will unite in this world only’. The poet is close to nature while depicting his beloved in the cuckoo’s call, hopeful sparrow, smiling khejri, month of rains….probably where the sun of aspirations rises.

The beauty of the collection is imbibed in the pretty corners of the pink handkerchief with the poet’s beloved’s name crafted upon and an abhorrent fight against the furnace of this world which the poet acrimoniously want to shatter and squeeze with reddened eyes waiting long for his beloved.
The poet is almost drowned into the intimate moments of imagination of love with his beloved when the moon arrives and sits, uninvited subconsciously on his bed making him feel the embrace and warmth of her hug, and the same circulating like blood mingled in his physique making an echo of thy touch with his veins of the deepest core of his heart.

The poet's restless plead to 'her' reflects his ecstasy to get her as his soul - mate, desiring her to be his partner for births and ages when he pens "Now, you only guide me my mate, how to write you in my destiny?"

Can’t stop myself writing that the ‘Amarlata’ is the poet’s pen which inscribes the eternal love and utmost similar feel through his words into the worldly ocean of barrenness, sowing the seeds of hopefulness and deepest feel embossed upon his heart like eternity, infinite as his soul’s craving for his beloved which brings accolades to the poet for the admirable collection which appears more like an albatross in the ocean of hatred all around in present scenario.

Ash and Coins - Punjabi poem by Amarjeet Kaunke

Poet: Amarjeet Kaunke

Translated by Rajni Chhabra

One misty evening
Or some crimson morning
I will re-appear
Sooner or later.

In my one hand
I will be holding
Cadaver of my dreams
And in the other
Several silver coins.

Don't look at
Outcome of my dreams.
Dreams that
Breathed their last
Wandering for livelihood.
Rivers, with distinct features
That were lost in the
Dreary desert of hardships.

But, still from time to time
Arise in my poems.

That were like
Inky black hair
On my return
Will be tempered with
Silvery whiteness.
Dreams that,
While parting were fleshy
While returning
Will transform into wrinkles.
Dreams that were
Like childish trebles
On my return will be
Like shaky hands.

Crossroads of my city
Would fail to recognize me.
The old banyan tree
Stationed alongside road
Might be in slumber.

Don't glance at my face.
Don't try to locate
Innocence of childhood in it.
Don't glance at my feet.
Coz, dirt of time
Might have accumulated
On my feet.
May be,in  my eyes
You won't be able
To locate any lustre.

When, I will return
In my one hand
I will be holding
Ash of my dreams
And in  the other one
Will be holding
Several silver coins.
You just pick
Silver coins;
And ignore
Consequence of my dreams.

A soul stirring poem originally composed by Dr Amarjeet kaunke in Gurmukhi and translated into English by Rajni Chhabra.
Dr Amarjeet Kaunke is a reputed  bi lingual poet, translator, critic and Editor of PRATIMAAN, a monthly journal in Panjabi, published from Panjabi University Patiala, Panjab (India) He has authored nearly 50 books so far, including literature for children.

Impact of Numerology on Creative Writing

By Rajni Chhabra

Numerology is a predictive science based on study of Divine Numbers 1 to 9 and their corresponding influence on an individual's life. It is flourishing day by day on global level. Irrespective of language, religion and geographical boundaries, it is gaining wide recognition. Numerology is the study of numbers and their determining influence on one’s life. Numbers are the prime causes, which create, reform, rejuvenate and reshape the trend of life. They start producing their impact on your life right from the moment of the birth and will continue to influence throughout the life. All the nine planets are assigned with numerical value from 1 to 9 and govern the whole universe. In Numerology, these Numbers are called Divine Numbers. All the beings of this Universe are categorized in number One To Nine, according to their Date Of Birth (DOB) and attain traits of the Planet under which they are categorized.

For example, an individual born on

  • 1,10,29,28 of any month is assigned Birth number and is associated with Planet Sun, whose Number is One.
  • 2,11,20,29 of any month is assigned birth number 2 and is associated with Moon, whose Number is Two
  • 3,12,21,30 of any month is assigned birth number 3 and is associated with Jupiter, whose Number is three.
  • 4,13,22,31 of any month is assigned birth number 4 is associated with Uranus, whose number is four.
  • 5,14,23 of any month is assigned birth number 5 and is associated with Mercury, whose number is five
  • 6,15,24 of any month is assigned birth number 6 and is associated with Venus, whose number is six
  • 7,16,25 of any month is assigned birth number 7 and is associated with Neptune, whose number is seven
  • 8,17,26 of any month is assigned birth number 8 and is associated with Saturn, whose number is eight
  • 9,18,27 of any month is assigned birth number 9 and is associated with Mars, whose number is nine

Hence, a person who is categorized under a particular Planetary number will develop qualities related to that planet and his life will be influenced by it.
Personal attainments are governed by Birth number and luck is governed by your luck number

For knowing your luck number, count sum total of your birth date, month and year. For example 2.7.1981 2+7+1981
 2+7+1+9+8+1= 28
 2+8=10
1+0=1. Hence your birth no. is 2 and luck no. is 1

Birth Number of an individual decides his/her personality traits, physical , social and mental attributes, health, education, career, success on dint of personal efforts, personal property, marriage, matrimonial adjustments, raising family etc. What an individual attains in life through luck factor, is decided by his/her Luck Number. Prestige in social, domestic and business sphere, success or failure in profession, career aspect are governed by Luck as well.Knowledge of favourable and unfavourable Numbers renders us guidelines for utilizing positive numbers for betterment in life and avoiding negative Numbers so that path of life is paved smoother for us.

Our mental and social attributes, career orientation and chances of  success in various professions are all influenced by Divine Number 1 to 9. Poetry by Rajni Chhabra

Rajni Chhabra

THE PEACE AND HARMONY

Why an aloofness
Persists in human beings
Why we confine ourselves
In self built castle
We create around ourselves
A protection cell
Like tortoise
Brimmed with insecurity
And disbelief
Retreat ourselves
In that protective cell.
On hearing stranger's steps.

Once, just once
Cross the wall of disbelief
Share woe and weal of strangers
And demolish the wall.

Just become the brick
That will be used
Not in wall,
But constructing bridge
The art of living
Will follow
Spontaneously

Peace will prevail in your mind
Peace will reign the whole Universe.

Let faith be your guiding star,
To aspire harmony and peace
So that we breathe in congeniality
And unite world wide.

THE SUN IS SAME

The Sun is same,
But the radiance
Is new daily.

Same are rivers and streams
But daily fresh water flows.

Though same is our life.
Don’t get stagnant.
Daily endeavour
To tread new paths
And explore
New horizons.

MUSK DEER

Entrapping scent of musk
In himself
Confused was wandering
Musk deer

Ocean of happiness
Confined within himself
Was moving betrayed
In all the four directions
