1. Conceivable

Where the heart lies
With joyful golden colors
Evening and the dusk
Ground wet before it dries.
Wrapped all around
Bright big lamp post
With glowing wired bulbs
Shining streets, no sound.
Electric wires are below
Those street lights
Enhancing and magnifying
To brighten the houses in a row.
Suspense and excitement
What will be at the turn
Meeting strangers at the corner
Bringing joy and appeasement.
Cleared dried fallen leaves
Pleasant weather in the fall
Ready to welcome the winter
As a cold chill with snow heaves.
Very far I see with my eyes
Tall trees at the corner
Bare with scanty leaves
Merging with blue colored skies.
Alluring to stop and create
Looking at the lanes
Visibility too is serene
Vibrations make it even great.

2. Two Roads

One on the side
The other one
In front of the houses
Maybe the townhouses.
Possibility
One for parking
The second for stopping
As needed by the drivers.
Whether they stop or drop
All clear at this moment
Roads silent and calm
Forcing us to think about.
Unfamiliar and strange
Hidden and concealed places
The colorful ambience
Of the surroundings.
Doors closed and
Even windows shut
Some are lighted inside
Others are pretty dark.
Waiting for the owner
To return and step in
Turn the lights on
Unify it with the outside.
Two roads whether merging or not
Houses are lighted or not
Surrounding brings varied mood
Looking at the two serene roads.

Costa Rica: A Country with Only Two Seasons

Map of Costa Rica

Sushma Malhotra

I always liked to travel to new places so that I could perceive and learn something about them. When I learned about a tour to Costa Rica I immediately decided to join the group. On May 03, 2025, I traveled to Costa Rica, a country in Central America. Most of the countries in the world have four seasons: spring, summer, autumn (fall), and winter, which are caused by the Earth's tilt and its orbit around the sun. These seasons create specific climate conditions, impact the weather patterns, animal behavior, plant growth, and human activities.  However, Costa Rica has a tropical climate with two distinct seasons only: a dry season (December to April) and a rainy season (May to November). Costa Rica is in close proximity to the equator as it is 10 degrees North of the equator. Both Pacific and Atlantic oceans contribute to the climate of the country. Costa Rica’s temperatures are generally warm throughout the year, averaging between 70 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Thus in simple words, Costa Rica has only two seasons; Dry Season and Rainy Season.

From December to April is the driest time of the year, with the least amount of rainfall. From May to November the rainiest time of the year with frequent rainfall, especially in the afternoon and evening. The dry season is ideal for beach vacations and outdoor activities, while the green season is good for hiking and wildlife viewing. It is during the rainy season when the landscape is lush and green, and many wildlife activities are abundant. When we went it was very humid as the humidity is a natural part of the tropical climate. From lush rainforests to pristine beaches, Costa Rica promises an unparalleled experience for visitors. Going on a trip to the tropical paradise can be overwhelming and thrilling due to its diversity and breadth of attractions. Costa Rica, known for its biodiversity and commitment to conservation, plays a substantial role in the global travel sector. Knowing all this I was looking forward to a real adventure in the Rain Forests of Costa Rica.

My husband and I boarded a non-stop flight from Newark, New Jersey to San Jose Costa Rica. Around noon we landed at the San Jose, Costa Rica international airport. The tour director received us at the airport and escorted us to the tour bus to get to the city Monteverde. We along with other tourists boarded the bus and sat down comfortably. After about a four hour bus ride we arrived at the Hotel Poco a Poco. Hotel Poco a Poco is a boutique hotel in the heart of Santa Elena, offering comfortable accommodation just minutes from the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. This accommodation was very family-friendly and located with easy access to the activities in nature. Located within proximity to cloud forest attractions the hotel provided an ideal base for exploring Monteverde's natural wonders.

Nuboso Trail
The next morning we went to the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve with biodiversity across distinct ecological life zones. This four-hour Monteverde Cloud Forest Tour was a guided nature hike. The Monteverde Cloud Forest was inhabited by a vast array of mammals, birds, butterflies, amphibians, reptiles, insects, arachnids, mosses, epiphytes, lianas, and trees.

We had a naturalist guide, who pointed out animals and plants while providing commentary about Monteverde's natural world. While wildlife sightings could not be guaranteed, we observed the beautiful cloud forest and a scenic journey to the Nuboso trail.

After the hike we came back and relaxed at the resort and had a delicious dinner around the fire in the open.

Lizards, iguanas, snakes, toucans, and parrots
The next morning our adventure began with a 39-kilometer drive through cloud forest to R├нo Chiquito. For that we boarded a comfortable pontoon boat for a 40-minute cruise across Lake Arenal, Costa Rica's largest lake. On the way we watched the migratory birds and possible wildlife sightings along the shoreline. During our 2.5-hour guided walk, we looked for wildlife including howler monkeys, poison dart frogs, red frogs, snakes, toucans, and parrots.

When tourists think of Costa Rica, one of the first places that comes to mind is Arenal Volcano. Arenal volcano is located in the country’s northern region, this majestic volcano is an active stratovolcano. Although it has erupted and has calmed down in recent years, Arenal still remains one of the country’s most popular tourist attractions. We got a spectacular view of the Arenal Volcano also.

Arenal Volcano
The boat took us near the Arenal volcano and we took multiple photos. After disembarking the boat we continued by minibus for our journey to the Arenal area hotel, enjoying spectacular views of Arenal Volcano along the way.

Arenal Manoa resort offered us spacious rooms and suites with panoramic volcano views, that were set within well-manicured tropical gardens. In this resort there were hot spring pools, jacuzzis, and a swim-up bar, plus an on-site farm that we could tour. After settling in our individual rooms we all looked for a hot spring pool and spent almost two hours in the pool and felt relaxed. Hot springs were perfect for relaxation. Later we all had a nice dinner at a restaurant within the premises of the hotel.

Panoramic Volcano view from Arenal Manoa Resort
It was amazing to see that the location provided easy access to attractions of a peaceful atmosphere surrounded by gardens and trees in the rainforest with a view to Arenal volcano..
Next morning we went for a combination of a rainforest exploration and waterfall adventure. Our experience began with a 30-minute drive to the hanging bridges, set within a 620-acre reserve of primary forest. Here, we embarked on a 2-mile trail featuring 16 state-of-the-art hanging bridges that introduced us to the forest's rich biodiversity as we looped through the mountainous area. Then we crossed over six suspended bridges through the deep forests.

After crossing over all the bridges we continued to the stunning La Fortuna Waterfall, which drops 210 feet into a natural swimming pool. We could hike down to the base of the waterfall and take a refreshing swim in the pool below, making it a perfect spot for a relaxing break. However, to get to the waterfall we had to walk down more than 500 steps and to take the same number of steps to come back up. We arrived at the bottom of the waterfall and enjoyed the freshwater waterfall. We found the La Fortuna Waterfall, one of Costa Rica's most beautiful natural wonders. The waterfall is about 70 meters tall and is surrounded by lush jungle, creating a stunning sight.

La Fortuna Waterfall
After climbing 500 steps, we walked in the surrounding rainforest before having drinks and snacks while enjoying the waterfall’s experience. We returned to the resort and decided to relax by sitting in the hot water geyser. In the evening we walked around in the natural environment of the tropical forest and gardens.

After staying two full days at Manoa Resorts we moved to Manuel Antonio and stayed at Si Como No Resort & Spa. The hotel is located at the coast of the Pacific Ocean. The view was awe inspiring . We arrived here in pouring rain. After the bus ride we wanted to rest in our own rooms and have dinner as well. Surprisingly we learned about Indian Restaurants, Namaste India and Hola India in the neighborhood. We ordered dinner from Hola India and got it delivered to our room. Getting Indian food in Costa Rica was satisfying and heartfilling. We honestly enjoyed the freshly cooked Dal Tadka and Gobhi along with Nan and rice.

Suspended bridge, beach, biodiversity and open spaces
Next morning while walking down from the room to the hotel restaurant for breakfast we saw iguanas crossing the sidewalks. Then we noticed a mango tree just outside our room. The hotel employees collected the mangoes and offered us to enjoy the taste of mangoes straight from the tree. It reminded us of India where we used to eat mangoes picked directly from the trees.

After eating breakfast we went for another hike and explored Manuel Antonio National Park, the smallest national park in Costa Rica. This park is listed by Forbes as one of the world's 12 most beautiful national parks. This unique destination combines natural rainforest with beautiful beaches. This was an informative hike through the park, helping us to spot wildlife including three of Costa Rica's four monkey species (White-faced Capuchin, red-backed squirrel, and howler monkeys), sloths, coatis, agoutis, colorful land crabs, and numerous bird species. We learned about the area's history, flora, and fauna while enjoying the stunning natural surroundings. Costa Rica is also very famous for its banana plantations and coffee. Therefore, I did not forget to buy some Costa Rican coffee and chocolate to bring to the United States.

Sushma Malhotra
On the last day of our tour we stayed at the Hampton Inn & Suites located near the San Jos├й CR International Airport, offering convenient accommodation for our last night in the country. We stayed there for one night and the next morning we took our flight back to the United States.
Before concluding my travelogue, I would like to include that the Costa Rican people affectionately refer to themselves as Ticos. This term is rooted in how they play with the Spanish language and can also carry an affectionate or ‘cute’ meaning. Pura vida" is a Costa Rican phrase that translates to "pure life" or "simple life" in English. This wonderful quality lays at the root of their peaceful and kind nature. The locals go out of their way to propagate their environmental ethos by helping visitors appreciate the natural beauty of their land and wildlife. During this trip I was astonished to learn that Costa Rica does not have an army. After a brief civil war in 1949 Costa Rica was constitutionally prohibited from maintaining a standing military. However they do have a Public Force, which is a paramilitary police force responsible for maintaining internal security and border control.

This was my first tour ever in the tropical forests where I hiked through the rain forests, suspended bridges, beaches on the Pacific and experienced the humid climate. This trip fulfilled
my desire of walking in a Tropical Rain Forest surrounded by a varied form of biodiversity and a firsthand experience of a country with two seasons only.

1. Juxtaposition

Look above all the way up
The very high sky
Reflecting light grey color.
Clouds merging with
Low peaks and slopey hills.
Shadows of dark colors
Gleaming on the front peaks
Merging with open water.
Getting darker as moving farther
Far off the light grey paint.
Though soothing!
Jetty displayed a warning sign
Standing on strong pillars.
White seagulls perched there
Crane in the middle dominating
As if owning the space.
Stunning and petrifying
The viewers with prophecy
For a divination with alert.
In the open wide space of water
Solitude and tranquility
Parallel to man-made predictions
One is offering peace
The other has perilous forecast
Based on reckless actions.
***

2. Visible Distinction

The piercing quietness
Seclusion and desolation
Reflecting from the mountains
Without any stir or sound.
Quietly floating clouds
Water moving at its pace
With no waves or tides
Everything is standing still.
Adding solitude and tranquility
Providing solace to the mind
See as far your eyes can reach
With an appreciative gaze.
In search of peace and quietness
Who would avoid this place;
Clouds and peaks merging with water
Unifying all in one grandeur.
Though a predictive warning sign
Distinctly displayed on the jetty
Prohibiting each and everyone
Must not jump or dive.
Winged creatures dared to challenge
One wonders at the innocent birds
In Isolation strolling gleefully
Reflecting in the serene water.

Unifying

A string below a finger
Touched to produce some music
Calm surroundings with motionless skies
Sleeping birds and hidden squirrels and rabbits
Bring a movement with stirring all.
I just needed one string not cello or harp
To break this silence
To create a connection
between Him and me.
In silence, this sound
Entered into my soul
Deep enough to pierce my thoughts
Brought old memories
Yearning for true love and a hug in quietness
To subdue the sad thoughts of missing someone.
As the string with a touch of my fingers
Gave way to break monotony
Merged with the twittering
Of melodious sounds around
Eventually became one with heart and mind.

Cycle of Music

Music of seclusion
Played in isolation
Filling the surroundings
With the emotions
Of joy and sadness.

Sweet enough to pierce
Merge with the soul
Be a part of the body
From mortal humanity
To the immortal nature.

Spreading in the enormous clouds
Touching horizon reaching the orbit
Echoing in the vacuum
Returning down to the earth
More melodious and musical.

Uplifting Music

Standing alone amidst the nature
Singing with her ability and vigor
Her soulful vocal cords affecting
All those feel lonely in the crowd
As offering an unfeigned company.

Approaching the swirling rivers
Falling from the high mountains
Splashing and spraying waterfalls
Thundering and producing
Soothing white natural voice.

Chances to reach a forest
Amidst the fallen trees
With crashing and cracking noise,
Snapping of the breaking branches
Or a thud of the trunk hitting the ground.

On a tranquil peak with serenity
In the placidness of Nature
Undisturbed and untouched
Echoing and resounding to
Reach back to integrate and merge.

I love that moon

Reflecting in the water, I love that moon,
Standing on one edge of the calm river,
I stared and gazed deep water in June,
Startled with the motion as if I shiver.

Not the moon alone reflecting and shining,
She was standing above the river edge,
Looking at the river in dusk for a binding,
With stretched arms to fly using her fledge.

Gleaming moon moving with a flair,
On the water falling moon’s radiant rays,
Breezy wind blowing her loose hair,
Flowing elegantly and gently as always.

She follows the direction the moon goes,
Sweating forehead glistens as dew on a rose.

Move

Some moves remain with you
Though you try to forget
But they embrace you
Always revolve around you
Like the aroma of your body.

The moments come with you
Of the time spent with loved ones
Happy and blissful moments
Joyful and exuberant time
Make your move less agonizing.

Large boxes and bags
With clothes and utensils
Get heavier as filled
Emptied easily though
Ready to be refilled.

Heart loaded with memories
Of significant conversations
Shared secrets with trust
With family and friends
Never get fully unpacked.

You revive recollections every minute
Try to unfold and outcaste them
Unable as each fold gets buried
Below each moment’s accumulations
And piling up with more remembrance each day.

Identity

I am desolate and forsaken bench
Waiting for human company
I am available forever
To give solace and relaxation
To those willing to shed their tears
To express their pain
Outpour their screams
For the sky to hear

Come sit and share your secrets
Of love and admiration
Of remembrance and reminiscence
Of Plans and Dreams
Spread them on me
For others to pick from there
I resemble you as I am an epitome of
Solitude and isolation
I am a “Lone Seat in North Haven.”

Pronouncement

One big and one small tree
Giving company to each other
Bearing all kinds of weather
Falling of rain and shower
Snowfall and blizzards

Nature around them
Wondering at the thought of the unknown
For putting a bench near a road
Expecting a passerby to stop
Unexpectedly though momentarily

May be a hiker tired or stranded
Beneath the trees and brood
About the path to take next
Trusting the nature where both trees
Standing and supporting each other

The density of the leaves
Providing shade and fresh air
Uplifting the spirit in lonely landscape
Relaxing from the city sound
Escaped. away from the town

Learning from the wildlife
To strive in the rain or snow
Stay together and offer self
Who need rest and admire
Before you wither with weather

Candid Image

Nature is always infinite
Humans cannot measure it
It’s vastness remains unaccountable
It opens itself abruptly
Unexpectedly exhibits candid image
Sometimes abandoned
Represents cosmic recklessness
With boundless views
Offers city or town dwellers
To accelerate their journey
To figure out untold stories
Of paved or unpaved paths.

Landing on the Glaciers Trip to Denali National Park

Sushma Malhotra
Who does not want to go on cruises? I always wanted and waited long enough to get an opportunity and travel on a cruise. The Alaska Cruise was like a dream come true for me. In August 2018, I along with my husband went on a southbound Alaska Glacier cruise- Voyage of the Glacier Cruise in Alaska-Princess. This cruise had two options, Northbound Alaska Cruise and the Southbound Alaska Cruise. We preferred the Southbound Alaska cruise starting from Whittier near Anchorage. Southbound Alaska cruises have fewer days at sea as compared to the Northbound one. This allowed us to spend more days in Alaska ports or National Glacier Parks and experience other excursions in nature.

Most cruise lines operating Southbound Glacier Cruises offer these cruise tours from Anchorage and our cruise was starting from Whittler, Anchorage. Therefore, we flew to Anchorage and stayed there for two days. Anchorage, Alaska’s largest city, is in the south-central part of the state on the Cook Inlet. Anchorage is known for its cultural sites, including the Alaska Native Heritage Center, which displays traditional crafts, stages dances, and presents replicas of dwellings from the area’s indigenous groups. The city is also a gateway to nearby wilderness areas and mountains including the Denali National Park , Chugach, Kenai and Talkeetna.

We decided to visit Denali National Park, which is a home to a variety of plant and animal life, and a variety of birds, reptiles, and mammals.

It is also home to a number of unique geological features, including Mount Denali, which is the highest peak in North America at 20,310 feet above sea level. Denali National Park and Preserve, formerly known as Mount McKinley National Park, is an American national park and preserve located in Interior Alaska, centered on Denali, the highest mountain in North America. Denali National Park and Preserve includes the central, highest portion of the Alaska Range, together with many of the glaciers and glacial valleys running southwards out of the range. I was amazed to learn that the glaciers cover about 16% of the 6 million acres of Denali National Park and Preserve.

The word Denali means "the high one" in the native Athabaskan language and refers to the mountain itself. We wanted to experience the stunning beauty of the area by taking a ride in the helicopter.

There were various flight companies that arrange the glacier landing tours via helicopter with expert pilots. We booked a flight with one of the companies and boarded the helicopter with one more couple as the helicopter could accommodate only four passengers along with the pilot. As the helicopter flew high the pilot pointed out wildlife below and provided information about the area and plant life.
I was scared, apprehensive and even nervous to think about the glacial landing. I was stupefied and astonished to realize that the helicopter was above the snow covered peaks and I immediately took many photos of those peaks.

This trip before going on the Southbound Alaska Cruise exceeded my expectations and developed excellent memories. The time on the helicopter flew very fast. Soon the helicopter landed on the glacier. Unbelievably the flight and the landing both were very smooth. I noticed that the experienced pilot was very passionate about his job, very pleasant, welcoming, friendly, and honestly caring about his clients. I was awestruck by this unbelievable experience. The glacier landing was the highlight of this trip and I didn't believe that I did it. This was my first ever flight in life on a helicopter.

The beauty of Denali was visible and its scenery and glacier view were amazing. After the landing we stood there and watched overwhelming beauty and serenity in nature. It was a memorable trip and I wish to repeat this experience again in my life.
“I beheld and just gazed around
At the stunning beauty of nature
Alluring to stay there longer.
Time calls and I leave behind
The blissful and secluded
Ethereal and elegant mountains”.

Sushma Malhotra, New York

Imprudent Mankind

Sushma Malhotra
I love to go for a walk regularly. Most of the time my husband gives me company. There is a Kissena park in our neighborhood where we enjoy going and perceiving nature. We experience and capture all kinds of weather phenomena and seasonal changes just by going there regularly. Kissena park is located in Flushing, Queens, New York. Kissena Park is a 235-acre greenspace constructed along the historical route of Kissena Creek—which, buried over time by development, is now represented above ground by Kissena Lake itself and nearby marsh habitat. This is a beautiful park that has green grounds, trees, children’s parks and a lake. Kissena Lake is one of New York City's natural water bodies, and has been through several man-made transformations, the latest of which was completed in 2003 to bring the lake back to a more "natural" condition.
Besides the natural surroundings, a fascinating thing is the aquatic birds in the lake, significantly, ducks, gees, seagulls that fly in and out of the lake occasionally. But the most distinguished feature is observing a pair of swans. We usually notice ducks, geese, and seagulls and in a group of five to ten. Sometimes they have baby ducks, chicks or baby seagulls together. It’s only the pair of swans that brings emotions and a topic to discuss in the park. In 2022, we observed the swans piling leaves and twigs to make a big nest on the grassy ground in one of the areas around the lake. We realized that the female swan was going to lay eggs. Last year between late March to April the female swan laid seven eggs in almost one week.

Out of curiosity I started to research about the swans’ pregnancy and their practice of laying eggs. I learned unlike other birds a swan lays only one egg at a time. I learned that a swan needs to hatch her egg at least thirty-five to forty-five days. I along with other morning walkers waited to see the cygnets coming out of the nest and sitting on the mother Swan’s back, side, or following her in the lake. Each day the thought of seeing the swans with cygnets forced us to be persistent and regular for our walks.

We started counting the days and passing each day was becoming harder and harder for all of us. All walkers and joggers in the park used to gather around and discuss the possibilities of the cygnets. After a few days we noticed there were five eggs and no cygnet yet. Everybody was talking about the missing eggs. Then someone mentioned that maybe racoons ate them. What a sad thing to learn! We continued going for walks and checking on the eggs. We observed one of the swans sitting on the eggs consistently and the other swan in the lake searching for food. April month led into May! Then we noticed a sign of Mother's Day on the fence with the hope to see cygnets by Mother’s Day. May also passed and the swans continued to sit and hatch but unfortunately one by one the eggs continued disappearing. The rumor was that someone had been stealing their eggs. True to the rumor no egg was hatched and there was no cygnet for us to watch following the swans in the lake. Very disheartening and depressing! Very sad for us to watch! What would have been going through the hearts and minds of the swans. Mute and unable to speak! How mean can human beings be? We noticed that the swans had been around the nest they had made to lay and hatch their eggs. Eventually we saw both the swans only floating in the lake water.

Now, in 2023, the winter is getting over and we are experiencing changes in the weather. As the weather changes we observe the change in the surroundings, plants, trees and the birds movements. We continued our walk in Kissena Park. We see ducks, geese, seagulls and our pretty pair of swans. I was hoping to see the swans laying and hatching eggs this year too. During the last week of March we noticed the female swan laid an egg and then eventually she laid four eggs in total. The walkers started to stop, look at the swans, take pictures and wish to see the eggs being hatched.

Whenever we went for our walk we observed one of the swans sitting on the eggs. Regular walkers in the park started crossing their fingers to see all the eggs hatched and cygnets in the lake with the swans. What a shocking thing to observe the next week that all four eggs were missing from the nest. There were rumors that someone stole all the eggs from the park. Now whenever we go for a walk we see both the swans around their nest as if looking for their eggs. They look sad, scratching, pulling twigs and pecking their own built nest. Silent, mute, birds unable to express their pain! Last year we thought that the weather was not favorable for hatching faster and then someone stole the eggs. This year, the weather in April was warm enough to support the swans to hatch their eggs for thirty to forty days. Who stole those eggs and why? Who can bring their eggs back for them to hatch? I wonder what they must be feeling and saying to each other.

Now we go for a regular walk and see those two swans alone in the lake floating in the water or outside the water; resting with their heads down.

Why will somebody steal eggs from the mute helpless swans? What an inhumane, inconsiderate, and brutal act!

Visiting Shree Jagannath Puri, Odisha

Sushma Malhotra
Going to India is like a wish come true! Especially when I could not go there for almost three years from January 2020. The whole world was at a standstill due to COVID 19. Forget about traveling to another country, there was even no question of leaving one's hometown. Thanks to the scientists for the medical science research, who made the COVID 19 vaccine and boosters available to the whole world in time, allowing free movement of people gradually. After almost three years of such an environment my husband and I decided to come to India in December 2022 to attend a family wedding. The wedding was in Delhi in the first week of December. Whenever I go to India, I always want to visit one or the other historical and religious places. Because going to India does not mean just sitting at home and gossiping with relatives. So, we planned to visit Shri Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha. We contacted a travel agent and booked our Puri Odisha package for three days. My husband and I took an early morning flight from Delhi to Bhubaneswar and reached Hotel Pramod in Puri.
Since we had booked a package which included our stay and transportation, we did not face any inconvenience in reaching there. We stayed at Hotel Pramod Puri which is located near Golden Beach.  We reached in the afternoon, took some rest and decided to visit the Jagannath temple first thing in the evening. Jagannath is a Sanskrit word derived from Jagat meaning "universe" and nath meaning "Master" or "Lord". Thus, Jagannatha means "Lord of the Universe". We had talked to a priest and got escorted to have darshan inside the temple.

Our pre-booked car took us as far as cars could go. Then we had to take an auto to go near the temple. Auto was also stopped about 200 meters before the temple. My husband and I walked to the temple premises. Devotees were standing in queue to have darshan of Shri Jagannath ji. However, our pre-arranged priest guide took us to the temple and we got a close look at Shri Jagannathji. In this temple there is a trinity of Shri Jagannath ji along with his brother Balabhadra ji and sister Subhadra ji.

In Odisha, Shri Jagannath is the Supreme Lord, Purushottama and Parabrahma. According to many Hindus, Shri Jagannath is an abstract representation of Krishna, or Vishnu, sometimes as an avatar of Krishna or Vishnu. After having darshan of all the three idols, I was mesmerized and felt blessed that I had been able to have darshan of one of the Char Dhams. There are four Hindu pilgrimage sites in Dham as defined by Adi Shankaracharya and the Jagannath Temple is one of those four. There we decided to offer Mahaprasad to Shri Jagannath ji. I came to know that Mahaprasad is of two types. One Sankudi Mahaprasad and the other Sukhila Mahaprasad. It is said that 56 types of prasad are offered to the deity every day during the puja and all of them are prepared in the temple kitchen. We ate mahaprasad, felt blissful, and were blessed to taste it.

Next morning, we went to the Golden Beach, a beach which truly lives up to its name. It is a beach of Bay of Bengal. There is a ticket to enter this beach. We found that the beach was very clean and well maintained. We watched the sunrise at the Golden Beach in the morning and enjoyed a walk on the beach.

After breakfast, we went to visit Konark Sun Temple. The Sun Temple of Konark is about 35 kilometers northeast of Puri city on the sea coast in Puri district of the Indian state of Odisha. The temple was built by King Narasimha Deva in the 13th century. It is counted among the 7 wonders of India, famous for World Heritage Sites and also known as "Black Pagoda". The Sun Temple of Konark is famous for its unique architecture. Its geometric patterns and carved wheels served as sundials. This Sun Temple was built by King Narasimhadeva-I of the Ganga Dynasty in the Kalinga style. The Konark Temple is built in the shape of a chariot of the Sun God. It has twenty-four wheels and seven horses. Kalinga style and today it is considered one of the seven wonders in the country.

The twelve wheels represent the 12 months of the year. According to the Indian calendar, each month has a Shukla Paksha and a Krishna Paksha, so the other twelve wheels stand for them. Three images of the Sun God can be seen in three directions to capture the rays of the Sun at dawn, noon and sunset. It was very sad to see the broken parts of the Sun Temple. However, I felt very happy to visit the Sun Temple and had the pleasure of learning about the reading of time with the wheels of the Konark Sun Temple.

On the way back we visited Raghurajpur Artisan Village, which is famous for its Pattachitra art, an art that dates back to 5 BC in the region. There people live in small houses and take pride in showcasing their art.

Every house in that village makes this art and sells it from lowest to highest price. We bought Pattachitra paintings on a piece of Tassar cloth. Which I am planning to get framed and hang on the walls of my house.

Then on the third day we went to Chilka Lake. Chilika Lake is a brackish water lagoon, located in Puri, which flows into the Bay of Bengal. We went on a boat ride on Chilka Lake. We learned that it was formed due to the silting action of the Mahanadi River, which flows into the northern end of the lake and the northern currents into the Bay of Bengal. We hired a boat and started our journey at Chilka Lake. During our boat ride some native people tried to sell us pearls and colored stones saying that they are real pearls and precious stones. Since we were informed about the scam and sale of fake stones, we did not make any purchase. After some time the boat reached the shore of the Bay of Bengal. We went to the shores of the Bay of Bengal and saw the vastness of the Bay. We noticed a few shops where they were frying fish caught from the Chilka lake. Wherever we went, we saw people sticking to their heritage and simplicity.

Then the next day we went to Lingaraj Temple in Bhubaneshwar. The Lingaraj Temple is dedicated to Harihara, a combination of Lord Shiva and Vishnu, this temple was built in the 11th century by Jajati Keshari, a Somavanshi king), Mukteshwar Temple (a gem of architecture). The Lingaraj Temple is one of the oldest and tallest Hindu temples in Bhubaneswar, the capital of the Indian state of Odisha.

The temple is a prominent landmark of the city of Bhubaneswar and one of the major tourist attractions of the state due to its religious significance and splendid Kalinga architecture.  In just three days I traveled to various historical places in Odisha and gained knowledge about Indian history. The trip was worth the money that we spent on hotel and transport as well as a guide etc.  Since I went to India from America after covid 19 lockdown and didn't want to eat outside food there. That's why we usually had breakfast at the hotel and had dinner back at the hotel. Thank god we didn't face any problem with food etc. and our entire trip to Shree Jagannath Puri, Odisha was a blissful success.

Ode to a Tree

Beauty of the trees, full of joy
Bring me a sense of its glow,
As the leaves shining feeling coy
Inviting the joggers to rest below.
Chirping of the unnumbered birds
Nestled amidst the leaves
Signaling the rain as it pours
From the pens of the herds
Shaking left and right tree heaves
Bringing joy to my heart that soars.

Masses wait after the scorching heat
Gaze at sky for sun to move away,
Yearning to dance with bare feet
Companionship stays will never betray.
Big trees changing faster facts known
Who wants to remember not to forget,
Ongoing routine continues with trees
Change will happen whether planted or sown
Masses work hard enjoy without sweat,
Flowers, leaves, branches all to squeeze.

Look wait is over and the time has come
All greenery changing from bottom to top,
Orange, red, brown, yellow make me numb
Lumberjacks adore, who came to chop.
My pains disappear and heart relieved
As the eyes sooth with the view on a tree
In search of the painter and his brush
Felt sensation within me and perceived
Unsung and unheard words felt His decree
Nature changed the colors in a hush.

Multicolored leaves covering the ground
Fluttering with the wind up and below
Sometimes in circles or going around
In the sun as kaleidoscopic balls throw.
Tall and elegant tree standing stripped
The gauchy look scares me with tears
Bending its branches to touch the land
Blue sky brings joy, all trees to be equipped
Want to encircle the tree, showing hope with prayers
Promising the drape of leaves as planned.

Moving Time

Slowly and slowly
step by step
the time crawled
to bring to its eternity.

Days in to weeks
weeks into months
months into years
then to the next year.

Dawn to dusk
noon to night
watching and listening
news and reports.

Numbers and names
closing and opening business
trains started working
frontline workers on job.

Politics continued
elections held
losing and winning
parties announced.

Arrogance held high
intelligence defied
race looked down
names were recognized.

The year will pass
the ball will drop
Times Square will lit
masses will watch.

What about the feelings?
What about the changes?
What about the friction?
What about the solutions?

Questions unanswered!
Mystery unresolved, unsettled, and unexplained!
Reasons unfounded, groundless, and unproven!
Connections Mitigated, diminished, and weakened!

Flashback

Who says time flies?
Today, forty years ago the clock stopped
for you, the day you left us all.
It seems this happened only yesterday,
not a span or stretch of a long time.
Now as I reflect and think of you,
I perceive your hands with blessings on me.
Your protection and shielding kept me going,
even now when I don't see and notice you around.
The last train ride I took with you,
your heart to heart conversation echoes in my ears.
Life moved on and we all progressed too,
feeling your presence and existence around.
Few things happened as you wanted,
others made their own way and a course.
Writing was always your love and passion,
now I will follow to pen down, as to send it to you.
You may or may not read my written words,
I know you hear me, as my heart beats for you.

Indelible Year

Finally, the last day of this year is here,
Imprinting many signs of its atrocities;
What is there, henceforth to make it endear;
When the masses focused only on reciprocities.

One small virus, traveled from an unknown place,
Compelled residents to vacate for a new habitat;
Forced even the toddlers, wear masks on their face;
From day to evening, masses defied combat.

Festivals and rituals came, but families stayed afar,
Worried for each other, expressing their concern;
Meditating and praying, for an enlightened avatar;
Whereas intellectuals are helpless to conclude and discern.

So subside it, degenerate it, and let it be quiescence.
The radiant sun rays scatter and disperse fluorescence.

Orchids and My love

Your love and beauty with solemnity
Grace and elegance talk of the town,
Attempted to find a flower for comparison
The orchid came into my mind as a crown.

Walking in an orchard during the summer
Crimson color and reflected shades secured,
Distinguished from all others in the garden
 Bright glistening pink radiance procured.

Spreading aura of beauty and fragrance
Exhibiting strength in front of nature,
Exemplary unusual charm in each part
Leaves bask in sunlight with tender texture.

Your grace and aura always mesmerize me
As white, purple and yellow orchids swing,
Resupinate flowers with their heads up
Bring good luck when orchids bloom in spring.

Dared to Walk in my Neighborhood During Covid-19

Stepped out and noticed every block desolate and bare
May be a dog walker stooping down while walking
Hardly anyone strolling outside for fresh air,
Walking with a distance covering their face with a mask
Knowing that coming closer to anyone was unfair.
Colden Street Auditorium deserted and renounced
Threshold waiting for footsteps of graduating students
Usually wearing colorful gowns, giggled and bounced,
Vendors selling balloons, flowers, and mementos
Parents were overjoyed when their kids' names were pronounced.
Both parking lots locked and meticulously secured
No security on job for no vehicles parked
Observe for pigeons and crows freely perched,
No human intrusion or interaction whatsoever
What an emptiness and quietness to be endured.
Queens College track brightly lit under the daylight
Neat and clean waiting to be trodden by the runners
My heart pumped faster, held my tears back very tight,
Lips trembled, hands clenched and throat throttled
I wished to bring life and uproar here now outright.

Your Reflections

I remember you a lot
I miss you too
I want to see you, feel and touch you
In my backyard and in the front.
when I look at the flowers
I see your image
every petal smiling like you
though hiding and in distance
it feels like you came and touched them
you added your beauty and elegance.
I feel like planting some flowers inside the house
as you come to touch the flowers
immediately lock
the door
and lock you in those petals
forever and forever.

Let us Join our Heart and Soul
To Light a Candle of Hope and Blessings

Remember:
When we all landed here
Who embraced us
Who opened its doors
Who fed the hungry
Who gave us work to earn
and support our loved ones?
It’s this motherland
We immigrated to
This is where our children
Went to school
Where they earned
Degrees and diplomas
and became professionals.
We left behind
Our own motherland
To seek opportunities
for jobs and business.
Let us join our heart and soul with gratitude
Light a candle of Hope and Blessings.
Now this Motherland
Who adopted us is unwell
Struggling to save
Its children, our children
Born here or immigrated.
Lamenting to protect
its frontline workers
of any color or race
in blue, white and grey uniforms.
To exhibit our support
To cheer her up
Let us join our heart and soul to strengthen
Light a candle of Hope and Blessings.
To uplift the spirit of the
Statue representing Liberty
Statue of Liberty
Who embraced us all
around its own pedestal.
Now jinxed and wounded
By some perilous black spirits
Hovering in all New York counties
And perched in the rest of the State.
Need some positive energy
For all to come out of the pandemic
Let us join heart and soul to heal all
Light a candle with Hope and Blessings.
